Hello.  I have enjoyed reading (lurking) everyone's posts.  I find it amazing the support that you all offer each other.  This website is awesome.  I have spent hours looking at the photos posted and reading peoples blogs and crying because I now know that their are others who are experiencing the same feelings of failure and frustration.  So, Thank you to you all.

I am a 31 year old mother of 3 little ones and the wife of an amazing husband.  I have been overweight almost my whole life.  There is a story that my old neighbor tells about me informing her that I was on a pizza diet at 4 years old.  I met my husband at 22 and was thin(for me, I was a size 12).  After being married, I had 3 kids in 5 years, the weight just piled on more and more.  I never considered surgery before children but finally decided after talking with acquaintances who have had surgery and has been very encouraging.  I had my first appointment at the surgery center yesterday and am very excited to get started.  Unfortunately, my insurance requires 6 months of visits first but I am hoping for January.

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for books regarding pre/post op gastric bypass.  Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Christine

Welcome, Christine!

The most useful book I found was Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies. Before and After is good as well but I found more useful info in the Dummies book.

Check out your library; I found some through interlibrary loan that were ok and I learned a bit from but certainly glad I didn't spend money on them.

Truthfully, I would also recommend a dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) workbook as well, if you ever eat to deal with or drown feelings/boredom/stress/etc.  I took a DBT course before my surgery (and I've done a workbook at home too) and without those skills on dealing with my feelings in healthier ways, this entire journey would have been so much harder. I would also suggest the Beck Diet Solution which helps you learn about your relationship with food and learn skills to cope with life with less of it. It's kind of a pre-diet book, it isn't a diet book that tells you what to eat.  If you don't have any issues like I did/do, I'm quite envious and ignore the above suggestions. But if you do, I really recommend getting a handle on them before surgery. I've found dealing with my feelings to be a lot more challenging when I can't numb myself with food like I used to. Life is better but it takes new skills that I'm so glad I developed before surgery. (A bit more advice than you asked for...sorry!)

Best of luck on this journey. The surgery is just the beginning!

Welcome Christine!

Fasten your seatbelt, you are in for the ride of your life!  You will be amazed at how fast those 6 months will go.  Use this time to develop the good habits that you will need post-op.  Practice not drinking 30 minutes before, during, and 30 minutes after meals, no more soda, chew, chew, chew everything, slow your eating down-take in the taste and texture of your food choices, eat protein first.......  The better you are about these things before your surgery the more automatic they are after!!

I look forward to going through this journey with you!

Hi Christine,  good for you deciding to have surgery.  I have BCBS and had to do the 6 month supervised diet thing.  Like Reenie said, you'll be amazed at how quick the time goes by.  Glad you came out from lurking to post.

Welcome

Christine,

I am not sure of your location in Mpls, but I encourage you to get involved with this board or even our many coffee gatherings to meet some awesome folks who have already taken this journey.

This Saturday, we will be meeting at the Caribou in Maple Grove at Byerlys, as many can tell you I am NOT the one to give directions, lol , but if you are interested,  someone will reply and get you directions  It's just a relaxing get together where we just sit and sip and gab.

One other thing I wanted to mention, waiting the 6 months is not a bad thing, it gives you time to plan, think and really get your head in the right place.

Hope to meet you soon!

Welcome, Christine!  Your time will be here before you know it.  I've read "The Emotinal First + Aid Kit, A practical guide to life after bariatric surgery" and found good information in it.  It is written by a psychologist, Cynthia Alexander.

Again, welcome aboard

Lauren

Thanks everyone!  I did order a couple books last night.  Weightloss surgery for dummies, The first + aid book and also purchased a cookbook for weightloss surgery.  I am very excited for all of this.  I scheduled the three other appointments that were needed before surgery, just to get them out of the way.  I would love to meet everyone for coffee, unfortunately my husband is working out of state right now and I need to save my babysitting time for doctors appointments.  Once he is home, I will for sure check it out.  Thanks for the warm welcome!
