Welcome to the MN board! Glad you posted. We're here for every person in every stage.
I had a different surgery than you, so I cannot answer specifically for the RNY, but will it get easier? Yes. Take it in 12 hour increments. Every 12 hours, things improve.
I know in the beginning, you may feel like taking big drinks of your water/other, but just take little sips if you can.
Do watch for dehydration, though. If you suspect it, just go in right away. You'll feel so much better after having some fluids from the hospital! It's so easy to get dehydrated after surgery, so do be cautious of it.
Rest easy - it will improve for you.

Hi bryanann, I had the same surgery as you a little over 3 weeks ago. It's hard to get the protein in at first so, for now, work on getting your liquids in. When you're feeling better then you can bring the protein into the focus again.
It DOES get easier. I'm a little too stubborn and ambitious sometimes so, while I'm supposed to only eat soft foods right now, I still had some baked chicken and a small salad at a cousin's wedding this evening. The chicken was rather moist, I chewed the hell out of it, and I have NEVER had such a delicious hill of lettuce greens in my life! If you have unflavored protein powder, add it to some cream of chicken soup since that's a liquid and should feel a lot better. I was able to manage thinned cream of wheat 3 days after surgery and I added protein powder to that. Sure, it doesn't taste awesome but it was something.
It's so hard at the beginning but it really does get better. After 5 days I felt so discouraged but you have to take it one day at a time. Sip sip sip is said so much here and it is a reality now. It's hard to wrap your head around it pre-op but it kicks in fast post-op. If you don't drink enough you're going to really feel like crap. Trust me. I went one day earlier this week not drinking near enough and felt tired, sore, and had 'yucky guts' the following day.
Did your surgeon provide you a time table for the food stages (liquid, puree, soft, regular foods)? There are MANY people here with really good info! Welcome to the boards!!

Thanks for your reply. It's great I have gotten a good response. I like the idea of cream of wheat. Maybe i will give that a try. I did manange to get some chicken broth down this morning and it was pretty good. My doc want me to stay on this liquid diet until the 30th when I see my NUT. Then I can begin pureed for a week and then soft for a week. I am so looking forward to even some cottage cheese. I have been on this liquid diet since May 27. thanks again for your response,
One thing I've taken to is sitting with the glass of liquids in my hand. I'm more aware that I MUST drink my fluids. It's a slow process. Yesterday I got in just over 45 oz of fluid and about 31 grams of protein. For lunch I "whipped" (literally) up cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, garlic, splash of spaghetti sauce and six slices of deli ham. Pulsed it up, warm in microwave = heaven. To help control portion size I bought a few demitasse spoons and little mini forks. It works.
The more you put in, the better you will feel. Go slow and try not to get overwhelmed.

Welcome to the MN boards you have come to a great place for support. Congrats on your surgery. I know it might not seem that way now but trust me it will get better. Just do your best in getting in your protien and liquids. It does take time to get it all in.
Wishing you all the best as you take this journey. It is an amazing ride. I'm so glad I did!!!
