Hair Loss

Some people that don't know I had surgery have made comments lately about my appearance, obviously they see that I have lost weight but don't know why and they notice a definate difference in my hair, it's not looking healthy and there is less of it!!! What do I do???!!!!! I am embarrassed of my hair thinning and I just don't know what to do.  I have gone from being really happy about all the weight I have lost so far to being depressed about my hair and I don't know what to so to people? Some of these people are family and I can't just stay away from them!  How long will the hair problem last and should I just invest in caps and hats??!! I am so sad right now!!!!

This has been the best decision besides marriage and kids that I have ever made!!

Try not to be sad!  You've done so well with your weight loss!  Make sure you're getting in the recommended amount of protein each day.  My NUT said hair loss could happen between 3 and 9 months out if you're not getting enough.

I can do this, I can do this, I can do this - AND SO CAN YOU!!

you my dear are doing great......I lost a bunch of hair But got most of it back and it looks better.  I lost mine right away and it didn't quit until almost a year out.  Hang in there sweetie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took Biotin vitamins......You can get them at any store......I quit taking them at 1 year out, but wish I didn't.... I'm going back on them because my hair is falling out again and looking dry..... I took 2 a day.

Actually had a coversation about this with my NUT today. She said it's due to the surgery itself, hormones, massive weight loss and lack of protein also.  Mine fell out quite a bit months 4-8..seems to be slowing a bit this past month. I continue to take the Biotin and won't stop for a long time! My hair is very thin compared to before surgery also. All we can do is take our vitamins, get our protein and think of the positive things.
Take care ~ Natalie

Can you get Biotin at say Walmart or Target or do you have to go to a GNC to find it? I want to start taking it ASAP after surgery next week.. (as soon as I'm cleared to take it)

You should be able to find Biotin just about anywhere vitamins are sold.  I do one 5000 mcg caplet a day.  Have for years, due to my thyroid causing me to have thin hair to begin with.

Also, there is a line of hair care products called Nioxin - great for thinning hair!  I've used that for years, too.  The folicle booster is spendy, but it really does help stimulate your scalp for new hair growth.

As depressing as thin hair is, it's temporary - and the upside is the weight loss!  The glass is half full...  always remember that.
