Milk

So I have always been a lover of milk.  Since my WLS 2 weeks ago, I had been scared to try it because of hearing about people becoming intolerant.  Well, tonight I tried it, and everything went well...BUT all of a sudden milk has a really strong after taste, and its kind of gross. Is this normal?

Also, I feel like I always have a bad taste in my mouth, and I feel like I have bad breath all of the time.  Is this normal?  I drink enough water, and I don't know what the problem is.

I've been told that tastes change after surgery... And your body chemistry is changing probably due to the surgery.

If your mouth continues to feel that way contact your surgeons office. They may have an answer for you.. have you tried rinsing with listerine to see if that combats the icky mouth feeling? (I used to work at a dental office) Otherwise seek the opinion of your dentist. I'd say try the listerine first.. you want to use something antiseptic vs a crest or colgate mouthwash without those ingredients.

Good luck

Hi There,
Congratulations on your surgery.
As far as the taste in your mouth goes, it could have something to do with the anesthesia.  It takes a while to work out of your body. After I had my gallbladder out, it took about 3 weeks or so for things to start tasting "normal".  There could be other issues related to the WLS though.  I have read about some of that too.
Good Luck!

Oh yeah! Milk was my most favorite thing on earth pre-op but now I can hardly force myself to drink it because of the after taste it leaves. Milk tastes a lot different when you aren't using it to wash down food like cookies or pizza. I found it tasted better when I would put it in the freezer for 10 minutes before I drank it because then it was nice and cold and that thick milk taste wasn't so bad. Good luck! I have the same problem!

The bad taste in your mouth right now is most likely from the Anesthesia.  But you could be experiencing ketosis its very common after WLS because of our high protein low carb diet.  As annoying as it is this is actually a good thing because it means your body is burning fat for energy so in sense means your losing weight.

Can be normal - you get sensitive taste buds after surgery IMO.

Ketosis is the bad breath. Yes, it's normal, too. Means you're body is in starvation mode, which it is if you're fresh out of surgery. It will balance out eventually, but until then, keep flushing with the water and keep some sugar-free mints/gum on hand.

I'm the exact opposite.  I hadn't drank milk since 1960 or so and now find that I love it.  I think the fact that your tastes change make it different for everyone.

Tastes definately changed for me after surgery and I felt the bad breath thing for I'd say the first two months. Sucks, but it will go away.
