prednisone and wls
Okay, so mostly I am alurker, but I am in need of anyone who has been on prednisone aftr having weight loss surgery. I am almost 5 years post op and have done very well. I was happy and healthy with myself, then in October, I developed a rash on my upper left arm. I thought no big deal it will go away. Now it is the end of March and my whole body felt like it wa**** by a truck. I couldn't function, went ot my primary and she sent me straight to a rehumatologist and dermatologist, I was diagnosed with dermatomoysits. It is rare skin and mucle disease. it is not curable, but treatable. I started with 60 mg af prednisone and am now down to 35 mg. I have gained some weight, but mostly have the moon face that goes withside effects of prednisone. This has been the hardest thing for me. to be happpy and healthy with myself and then bam out of the blue this happens. Just looking for anyonewho might share some insight.

Hi, Doreen! I was on prednisone post-WLS. I have ulcerative colitis (UC) and was started on it at 60mg IV when hospitalized in Nov. '06. I just got off it in Jan. '09. I was on it so long because each time I would taper to the lower doses (usually 10mg or less), I would flare and my GI would raise the dose again. He had me tapering very slowly. I, too, got the moon face. I also gained some weight and am now starting to lose it again. The prednisone also made me incredibly tired. It gives some people more energy, but not me. My moon face is gone now, but I have a pic on my phone that shows my moon face. I don't ever want to go on it again, and my GI says he doesn't want me on it, either. It will take some time, but the moon face will go away and you will start losing weight when you're able to get off of the prednisone.

Good Morning Doreen ~
I was very recently diagnosed with Crohns last month. As all of this is very new to me, I too fear weight gain and everything associated with prednisone. I was on 40mg of Pred for 3 weeks and have now tapered to 30mg. I still havent seen the moonface however I am not ruling out it wont happen. So far I havent gained weight, but again not ruling that out as I have found myself snacking ALOT..
Wishing you all the best on your prednisone and healing hugs to you..!

I got off the dreaded prednisone in Jan. '09 after over two years. I've lost my moon face and my appetite is pretty much back to what it should be. I'm starting to lose the weight I've gained, too. Hopefully, you won't have to be on it too long. Early on after diagnosed with UC I was on it for a couple times for two months each, but not long enough to really notice any side effects.
