Lorie, any major life alteration affects any or all of our relationship dynamics.  Work, family, and friends.  For example, I was diagnosed with MS Dec. 2001 after suddenly experiencing horrific visual problems. Especially since I've not been able to drive due to optic neuritis (blind spots and no peripheral vision!). As with WLS, the majority of people just don't 'get it'.  So by time I had WLS 7/26/06, I thought I'd 'learned' how to adjust to people's adverse reactions.  My opinion is that people may not know how to tactfully react or respond;  they may be 'afraid' something worse will happen if you're with them;  they may resent you for the drastic change, because it 'threatens' to potentially change them.  'Change', positive or negative can be threatening or uneasy for many people.  The important thing is to not take it personally.  As women, we tend to blame ourselves too often.  I'd been seeing a licensed psychologist for two years prior to my GP recommending WLS.  When I'd informed her, she said, "WLS is my specialty".  I still see her regularly, and this professional relationship has been a godsend!  Sorry so long, but I wanted to share all of this with you;  everything WILL be alright.  Hopefully there would be someone interested in going out for (decaf?) coffee after class.  Wishing you the best, Patti
