HELP!!!! My first business trip....

Teri K.
on 9/17/08 8:14 am - MN
...and I am failing miserably!  It all started with a 6:30am arrival to the office yesterday morning, preop at 8:30, team mtg at 11:30, flight at 2:15 and then dinner at a nice italian restaurant at 6pm!  UGH!  No regular breakfast, no lunch (just chex mix and trail mix picked up at the airport as boarding the plane), then lasagna (it was great, but oh so bad for me!)!  Today, working at 6am, tried to rush breakfast at the hotel, didn't work so well (if you know what I mean!), lunch catered into the plant (ceasar wrap - could have been a lot worse - pizza was the other choice) and now a dinner reception at a local musuem (gee, what do you think they will be serving) - so meanwhile, feeling hungry (head hunger) ate the rest of the chex mix and trail mix!  And on yeah - 2 diet sodas (small) but the point is that I have not had more than a couple sips of soda since BEFORE surgery!

UGH!  I still have 2 more days of this!  I truly need to get out and find someplace to buy some bottles of water - they want $4.50 for a bottle of water that is in my hotel room - OMG!  Even if my employer is paying for it - I just can't justify spending that kind of $$ on water!

On a brighter note.....before I left home I had to buy a couple pair of pants because the others were too big - I bought a size10 & 8...yes I said 8!  I can not believe it!  I actually wore the 8s all day today and still can't believe how great they feel and oh, by the way - how great I look!  I guess I really never thought this day would come!

Another side note...had blood work done yesterday as part of my preop - doc wanted to look at ferritin, b12 and vit d as long as we were doing general blood draw.....ferritin and b12 have come back.....ferritin (iron) is low - has dropped 2 points from an already low in May.  B12 is still good!  Anxious to see Vit D as I have never had this checked.  I have to confess, when the doc said she wanted to look at these things, I kinda sh*t my pants due to my negligence in vitamin taking!  I was/am afraid of getting busted!  And guess I did - as I have been on a iron supplement since May (which I have not been taking) and my number went down!   Ok, ok.....I'm on it!  I promise!  I am realizing the importance and will make this a habit/routine!

Luv ya all - missed seeing many of you last night!  Guess I better get ready for the dinner reception -

Teri, you are NOT failing miserably!  You are facing some unusual challenges, and doing the best you can!

I agree, BUY the water.  Then keep refilling the bottle - YOU NEED YOUR FLUIDS!   See if you can't get some protein bars - they save me when I'm in situations where I can't eat decent.  At @ 15 grams each, you CAN get by on them if you have to!

And don't beat yourself over the sodas - you've done GREAT knocking them out of your repetoire, a few won't put you back on the train to obesity!  Just do the best you can, and don't be so hard on yourself!!!

8's?  HOLY SHIZZ, SISTAH!!!   (I got my arse into 14's yesterday!!!)

Congrats on the size 8!  Pretty soon you'll be in 6's.  Yes, you will!

And like others said, you are  not a failure.  Work events like this are not WLS friendly.  Now that you know what to expect, take action.  Start by buying a case of water (if its possible) and some healthy snacks.  Even if you have to spend $4 on water.  It is important that you keep up on that.  You don't want to dehydrate and get sick while out of town.

Don't look back.  Look ahead!

I just got back from a business trip and I totally agree, it is hard to stick to the plan.
I did mostly soup/salad for lunch/dinner. Breakfast was ususally the healthy buffet that they offered at the hotel, but I had to get there early so I could get to my meetings on time, yuck!  I ususally just had yogurt, cottage cheese and fruit.  or you could order scrambled eggs and some type of meat., it was expensive, but what are you going to do?  I agree, buy the water!  The worst part for me was  the reaction that I had to deal with from clients when they saw how little I ate, they thought I didnt like my food or something?  I found that the soup/salad was easier to eat a larger portion and didnt get much if any of a reaction regarding how much I ate.
GOOD LUCK!!!

Teri,
Sorry this is late, but hey what can I say!! YOU ARE NOT FAILING MISERALBLY!!!! You may be a *****allenged for  few days, but you can get some water, even at 5.00 a bottle, and try to get some protein bars or cheese sticks for a quick hunger fix.... As for the meals with others, do what you can and don't feel bad if you can't finish your meal, ask for a togo container and if your room has a fridge then have that for your breakfast in the morning!
I did that when I was in orlando in Feb. Had Steak for breakfast for 2 days in a row!!!
I am so proud of you for sticking to the plan the best you can while o nthe road!! it is really really hard to get your requirements in while away from home.
Wow, size 8 pants!!!! That is fre**ing AWESOME!!! I know you feel like a million bucks and I bet you look like it too!!!
Good luck and let us know how things go!!
Safe Travels,
CarolN
