New gal on the board

Hey there!

A little about me: My name is Robyn and I live in Maplewood, MN. I'm 24 years old and will soon be having gastric bypass surgery. I have BCBS and, as most of you BCBS members know, they require 6 months of a monitored diet before a claim can be submitted for WLS. I have been meeting with a dietitian and a p.a. at Fairview Southdale Hospital since April 15th. That puts me at a "claim date" of October 15th. However, you have probably read in the news that Fairview and BCBS are most likely going to part ways. BIG BUMMER!! BCBS will not cover most procedures done at Fairview Hospitals after October 28th. Since my claim will be submitted so close to that date, there might be hope. FSH has been continuously moving my appointments up a few days, and my 6th and final check-in should be October 1st or 2nd. At that time they will send in my claim and hopefully I will be approved! FSH will then get me in as soon as possible for surgery and the rest will be history. But if I am not approved in time, or work doesn't give me the time off with such short notice, then I will have to find another hospital and surgeon, which I DREAD!

A little about you: I must admit, I have been spying the last few days. Your message board is SO inspiring! I have been tremendously encouraged and I'm learning so many things by reading about your experiences! THANK YOU!!

Even though October is not that far away, I have a long road ahead of me. I believe that things will work out the way they should, but when I start to think about all the possibilities, I start to get pretty overwhelmed. I have friends and family who have had the surgery, but they don't provide day-to-day support. I hope I will get to know all of you and maybe I will be able to encourage someone else they way you have all done for me! Any pre-surgery jitters advice you want to throw my way, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again everyone!

-Robyn

Hi Robyn!  Welcome to MNOH!!!  Lurking here is fine, but I think you'll get a LOT more out of it if you jump in with questions & such - we're all a bunch of people who are more than happy to share our experiences with you!

As for your approval process, well - I don't know jack about BCBS or Fairview, but I do believe in Karma putting you where you need to be when you need to be there.  Just keep doing what you're doing, it sounds like the people you are dealing with are on your side!

As for the jitters?  Normal.  If you DID'T experience any nerves or anxiety over it, there'd be something majorly wrong with you .  THIS IS A BIG DEAL!   Fortunately, it's also mostly all GOOD!  If you are ready to make a committment to following the rules for the rest of your life, then you can live a BETTER, HEALTHIER life because of it!  (And look DAMN GOOD doing it - you're a beautiful young woman!!!)

Keep coming here, get to know us!  Heck - come to one of our coffee get-togethers!  We have 'em all over the Cities, and EVERYONE is welcome!  This Saturday is Maple Grove, at the Byerly's off Elm Creek Blvd.  People start showing up anytime after 8am - there's a Caribou shop right inside, and we sit outside on the patio if it's nice!  We'd love to meet you!

Welcome Robyn!  This is quite a journey.

Pre-surgery advice - get support (family, friends, OH boards, whatever) as soon as you can.  You are welcome to come to any Saturday morning coffee.  This was the best source of support for me after I had surgery.  I wish I would have sought it out sooner.

Just remember that your mind will play many tricks on you.  It is normal to feel like you want to back out of it at some point.  It is normal to struggle with the diet after surgery (and before surgery, depending on how long you have to stay on a liquid diet).  We've all been there!  don't be afraid to ask questions!  Even the embarassing ones.

Again, Welcome!

Welcome Robyn! It's good to have you here. These MN boards just are the place to be. Everyone here is soooooooooooooooooo wonderful. I work at Fairview Southdale. I heard about the BCBS thing and was told not to worry about it. So, try to relax a little. You'll probably be okay. Good luck with your journey. Please do try to join in coffee groups or other events we have going on. We'd all love to meet you in person.

Hey Robyn! Welcome!

I have made more friends from this forum than I have in the last 5 years... (kind of sad, really! lol) The support here is like none other.

Being scared is normal.. and healthy. I had a lot of doubts before going into surgery... and some regrets the week after (due to the pain)... but eventually I healed up and am so thankful that I did what I did.

So, come out and join us at coffee sometime... and welcome! PM me any time if you want to chat!

Robyn,

WELCOME.........You will LOVE this board......This has been the best thing I have ever done in my life, other than WLS.....Meeting ALL the wonderful Women & Men has been great, and has helped me pull out of my shell......I used to be SOOOO shy......Well now you can't shut me up.....

I hope you don't have to switch Doctors, etc....That would be a bummer.....

We all talk about everything on here, from WLS to prayers needed to shopping, or coffee, etc.

I get my best support from the coffee group I go to in Maple Grove.....Although there is wonderful people at the other coffee get togethers too, MG is closest to me.......We meet every other Saturday around 8-9 am. till ???? At the Byerlys Caribou coffee.....COME JOIN US........It's a great group and we have alot of fun......And the support there is wonderful.......

Hope to see you at coffee, Kelly
