Thinking ahead - Coffee drinks after WLS
My dietician keeps reminding me I'm going to have to knock off the coffee drinks I've been having, preferably before surgery and for sure after. I never liked coffee until the dreaded Frappachino, and now like things like Mochas, etc. What can I have instead that tastes good but isn't too sugary or fatty? I can deal with skim but like foo foo drinks, and prefer Starbucks to Caribou. Sugestions? I only have something like this 3-4 times a week, no other caffine since I am not a pop drinker. But I like the energy, particularly the 3 days a week I work.

Hi there. I am a huge coffee drinker. In the beginning after sugery I was really good about having decaf but has time as moved on I have not been so great. But hey I drink a ton of water.
Any who I love Starbucks and my favorite drinks are:
Hot drink~Skinny Cinnomon Dolce Latte (Sugar Free & fat free)
Cold drink~Skinny Carmel with a shor of Vanilla Iced Latte (Sugar free & Fat free).
Most coffee places have sugar free syrups.
My doctor gave me the OK for coffee....the real stuff with caffeine if I drink all of my water plus extra for what I drink in coffee. I stick mainly to regular coffee or skim latte's sometimes with SF flavor shots. I need to be careful on the flavor shots cause sometimes I dump or feel lousy if I have too much sugar substitute. I get the protein in the milk plus the burst of energy. LOVE MY COFFEE! That was the worst thing about WLS before I got my coffee back. Good luck!

If you can try to make some changes before surgery just to prepare yourself. Some of those Frappachino's have nearly 1/2 a days worth of calories (post op) and like 79 grams of sugar. I usually can only tolerate about 5 -9 grams of sugar in anything without getting really sleepy and feeling just icky. When I go to Starbucks I usually get a tall, "skinny" (sugar free syrup) carmel latte (they have other flavors in SF syrups too). It really gives me the coffee fix (although I'm not a HUGE coffee drinker) and yet still tastes sweet enough to me; if they don't put enough syrup in it I just add package of splenda.
After surgery things you thought you could never give up just don't taste the same and you find it easier than you think to give it up.

The big thing that my surgeon and RD kept hounding me on was no "calorie containing" beverages, which means nothing w/more than 15-20calories. Coffee (I've only been able to drink decaf for the last 12yrs, so for me, it's not the caffine) is just fine as long as it's not loaded w/all the "extras". Yea right! I canNOT give up my mochas!! As long as you're not drinking them everyday and in large quantities, you should be just fine, though remember that they are loaded w/calories. Most places offer sugar-free syrups, and if they don't, ask them to use 1/2 the amt of the regular syrups. (that's something I have to do on occasion at small mom and pop stores) When you order a specialty coffee (mocha, latte, frappachino, etc) you can shave a few more calories by ordering it as a "skinny". That means that it's made w/skim milk rather than 2%. (skinny always deals w/the milk, not the flavorings they use) Depending on where you go, ask to look at the bottle of syrup 1st. I've found that different brands that have "sugar-free" on them actually have MORE calories rather than less. If that's the case, you're better off asking for them to 1/2 the amt of syrup. You still get the taste/flavor, but just not all the calories and sugar.
1 more thing to keep in mind...if you really like the frothed/foamed milk, skim milk (skinny) actually froths up BETTER than 2% or whole. When I replaced my old cappachino maker at home w/a new one, that was in the instruction booklet. I did my own comparison between whole, 2%, 1% and skim, and skim was by far the best!
Ok, here's a 2nd thing.....speaking of the froth....instead of having them put the usual whipped cream on top, have them add extra milk froth/foam (Caribou, Dunn Bros and Starbucks all call it something different). Either say no whipped, extra foam or ask them to make it more "dry". (dry means less steamed milk in the drink and more milk froth) Just another way for it to taste somewhat decadent but w/fewer calories.
