How long did YOU take off work post WLS?

Hey, for those of you with a desk job, how long did you stay off work? Did any of you not tell your employer you were having WLS? I really don't want to share and have plenty of vacation time saved up, plus only work 3 days a week as it is. I think I could get away with not talking about it with them, just taking vacation.

I had to tell my employer because I am full time and was missing time prior to my surgery for appointments. I was a receptionist at the time and my Dr suggested I take the full 6 weeks off (i had mine open) because I tend to take care of everyone else first and he really wanted me to concetrate on myself and healing. That being said, everyone is different, I have a co worker who had it done lap and was back at work after a week! The doctor should give you an idea and you can take it from there. Just my 2 cents!!

I had a desk job which did require some lifting (I was a bookkeeper at a grocery store) adn I took 2 weeks off of work. I was board after one week but was ready to go by two. If you don't want to share with your work the reason for the time off just tell them you need whatever time your doctor says and that is all they need to know. They dont need to know the kind of surgery or for what reason you are taking off. If your doctor says you need 6 weeks you can just tell them its for medical and that is allt hey need to know if that is all you want to share. Hope that helps and as always talkt to your doctor, all the opinions on here are only what that person experiences and should no way make you decide what is right without your doctors input.

I took off one week but then my job is out of my home....most of it anyway.
I wasn't allowed to drive for 4 weeks because of complications
I experienced during surgery.
I felt great after one week!
Your doctor will be a better judge of the time you will need off. All of us are so different in the way we heal and the pain we can endure.

Good luck....hugs....connie d

I've had two c-sections and seriously think I could have worked after 2 weeks, maybe less. I don't get the need for 8 weeks off, it's alittle much if you ask me. I'm thinking that RNY will not be as bad as the c-section, in part because it's laproscopic. I haven't met w/ the surgeon yet so I'll have to find out what he says.

Don't underestimate the power of the WLS. You will be tired-tired-tired for at least 2 weeks if not more.

I took a total of 2 weeks off, and that's counting bowel prep day and surgery day.  I was good with going back after a little more than a week and a half off, but I also told everybody what I was doing.  So when I got back, they were a little more accomodating for the more physical tasks.  We had all prepared for the possibility that I would need more time, but I didn't need it.  Just the lifting restrictions to follow.

Although I have a desk job, I took 4 weeks off because my job can be very stressful and I really needed a mental break as well.  I probably could have gone back after the 2nd week, but since my time was paid leave, I just stayed home.

I'd really rather not tell my boss at work about the surgery. She's already been noided out at my various DR appointments. I was out for a total of 6 months while pregnant and on maternity leave. I went out the end of August at 22 weeks pregnant and returned mid Feb after having Lauren. She made a snippy comment about me leaving early for appointments, when I have two days a week off. I snapped back " Don't worry, I'm not pregnant again." I think she fears I'm going to have another baby and will be taken off work again by my OB.

Although I have not had the surgery yet (1 more week...Yah!) ...I am only planning on taking 2 weeks off from work.  My job does not involve anything physically demanding...moving from meeting to another meeting.    I also chose not to share this with any one I work with.  I did tell my boss I was having some surgery done, but did not go into specifics ..and of couse they will not ask.  I do have the option to work from home if I need to.
