Regarding walking shoes: several years ago (much prior to PCP-recommendation for WLS,) I'd had numerous foot/ankle/shin /leg/lower back issues from merely fasted-paced walking.  Was referred to a podiatrist, *****commended orthotics for regular shoes, as well as the new New Balance ones numbered 800 and above. Per both the PCP and podiatrist, only the New Balance Walking shoes were recommended due to the specific internal componets which provide full foot support as well as exceptional shock absorption. Be aware, these are not the cheap popular knock-offs at department stores, which grossly lack proper internal design and construction for maximum shock absorption and comfort.  I was told to go to Schueler's Shoes, have my feet  measured and fitted, all for a comfortable , foot-supportive shoe which would not adversely/detrimentally affect the current pain/strain/weakness issues.  These shoes are meticulously, specifically designed to provide ultimate comfort and support.  Was suggested to purchase the 'genuine' NB , with numbers above 800 and above..  My faves have been two styles of #800s, which allow me to walk indefinitelyl with no post-exercise strains, pain, sore achy heels, balls of feet, and able to proceed forward with the speed walking without adverse effects.  These are my 'Dorthy/Wizard of Oz' ruby slippers per se, which always get me home....er, without pain nor discomfort.  There's no place like returning home after an exercise routine which allows the feet to feel pampered in excellent support.  They've withstood throughout floor gymnasium aerobics. kickboxing, trotting, I also only wear them when grocery shopping, brousing malls, all with tile-covered concrete floors.  They are not cheap:  several years ago I'd paid $169.00 apiece for two pair.  They last forever, and are the epitomy of comfort.  I highly recommend purshasing these shoes, as you'll be long appreciattive of putting the investment in to happy, healthy, pain-free feet, shins, and ankles!    I $$$ prevents you being able to get NB shoes, any drugstore sells Dr Scholl's shoe gel pads ('Are you gellin'?)  They have full shoe supports, arth supports, ball-of-the-foot supports.    Therefore, My two cents is to get workable comfortable shoes/or just the Scholl's GEL shoe inserts, then very slowly progress into walking1 /2 a block and back.  Helpful to do foot/ankle/leg warmups prior to and after walking.  ;Baby steps'--be gentle with yourself, start slowly and allow your mind and body a chance to 'get it'.  Wishing you the best of the best--you can do this, I'm confident you 'will'.  Hugs galore, Patti
