I went to Maplewood Mall to walk around and shop some on Thursday. It's now Saturday and my knees/legs are still giving me grief. I just don't know what to do--if my legs can't tolerate about 45 minutes of walking, how am I ever going to get to goal or get more weight off??

As it stands right now I've had to call in to work for today. I got squat for sleep last night, and all I want to do is self-medicate and load up on the icepacks.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I could try for other low-impact exercising??

Sorry you are having problems.  My first question would be "when is the last time you bought a GOOD pair of tennis shoes?"  Your beginning weight versus your current weight can make a HUGE difference in the impact and support part of your tennis -- hell on any of your shoes.  So I would first go get a NEW pair of high impact shoes that will support your feet properly so the knees and legs are not injured when you do walk.

Second -- try walking 10 minutes, then up to 15, then up to 20, etc. to get your body used to walking 45 minutes.  Sounds like you just overdid it on that day.

If you want low impact, just try doing floor exercise at home.  Maybe some side leg lifts, on your knees leg lifts to the ceiling, etc.  All the girlie exercises we did in the old gym classes.  They are low impact but do burn calories.  Call your WLS nurse or the physical therapist you saw in the pre-surgery stage and ask for suggestions too.....

You have come a long way -- But you ALWAYS have to be careful not to injure yourself at any stage of this process or at any weight.

Good luck......

I agree with Barb K.....you definately need new shoes after that amount of weight loss. Plus....you need to start out really slow...don't push yourself so hard. It will get easier.....just take your time. Eventually you will get up to 45 minutes of walking..... probably even longer and not even notice it.....the pain will disappear after your body gets used to using those muscles and joints again. Good luck!

Every little bit helps.

I heard a while back that for every pound you lose, 4 pounds of pressure is taken off your knees.  So it will get easier as you lose more.

I have severe arthritis in my knees (partly genetic, partly my weight) and my only option for treatment is an eventual total knee replacement - it's one of the reasons I got banded in the spring - I'd like to delay it as long as possible.  My orthopedic Dr. highly recommends swimming or biking and the best exercise with the lowest impact.  I can easily do 20-25 minutes on the stationary bike at the gym and am amazed at how much better my knees feel when I do it regularly.

Try it!!

Yeah I had a total knee 4 years ago at the age of 27.

And I will definitely try the bike option. I have one hanging in the garage, lol.

Good shoes are the key to life it seems. I remember growing up my mother always bought us good shoes, she would say you only get one pair of feet you have to treat them right. When I became and adult and mother and single mother I started shopping at no other then Payless. I figured they are only shoes, right? Wrong. Last year I developed planterfacititis and found out I needed better shoes! Hates when even at 46 yrs old my mother is always right LOL

My doctor told me when walking to not walk on cement, to which is what the mall is under the nice flooring. He said to walk on blacktop, grass or whatever to have some cushion to reduce the impact of things
Hope this helps

I agree with all the posts... plus I would look into water aerobics.... it really takes A LOT of pressure off muscles and the body and you can workout at the same time. My friend is a physical therapist and she says this is a good way as well. Check with your surgeons office and see if they have a physical therapist you can chat with about other excerice methods.

Hey!
Congrats on your super loss!!

One thing to think about is a physical therapy appt.  After I had lost about 120 my joints started to ache like the dickens.  I couldn't walk much as my hips were just burning with pain.. that kind of pain that itches it's so bad...

My doc mentioned to me that after loosing that weight, my joints had to go back to where  a normal weight person's would be and that it was going to be uncomfy...  right!  it HURT!  Seems my pelvis had rotated to accomidate the weight...  as well as my knees and hip joints.  I also had terrible shoulder issues as all of a sudden my arms were swinging right by my side instead of pushed out away from my body from the weight.  It's little things that no one mentions... but make perfect sense when you think about it.

He did suggest PT though as a help.  I didn't go and it took about 3 weeks before I was back to my normal level of pain.  I'd been through PT for all that stuff before so had a pretty good clue what they would throw at me but I will go if anything else crops up.

Just thought I would throw that out there.

Good luck!

*hugs*
