MY JOURNEY TO THIS POINT HAS TAKEN  2 WEEKS SHY 1 YEAR. MY DATE IS SEPTEMBER 2. I AM A MIX OF EMOTIONS. EXCITED AND SCARED AND JUST NOT BELIEVING THE TIME IS CLOSE. I JUST KEEP THINKING "WHAT IF I CAN'T DO THIS" (AFTER IT IS DONE) LIKE ALL THE OTHER TIMES I HAVE TRIED TO LOOSE WEIGHT.  SCARED TO FAIL AGAIN. I AM SURE OTHERS FEEL THIS WAY OR HAVE AND JUST NEED TO HEAR FROM OTHERS TO KNOW I AM IN THE NORM. HOPE TA HEAR FROM YOU.

Breathe, breathe, breathe!  What  you're feeling IS normal for many people pre-surgery.   This will be a life -long change of not just eating, but modifying the behaviors which led to overeating.  This is an invaluable tool which will help you proceed forward with success.  You've come this far, and it's likely scary to be losing a best friend:  food. In my humble opionion, I feel it's advantageous consulting with a licensed psychologist who specializes in WLS.  The upcoming year will be a WILD roller coaster ride of tons of emotions and pleasant healthy  surprises which will WOW you away!  Be good to yourself, follow your surgeon's clinic program, and hop on here for all the support and encouragement you'll seek.  Wishing the very best for you;  am moving over to save you a place on the losers' bench!  Hugs, Patti

All those feelings are very very normal. Up until your surgery date it is very typical to feel excited, depressed, sad, angry, frustrated, shamed, afraid, like a failure, hope, doubt... and so on and so forth.

It was a rollercoaster for me... and is for a lot of people. I think it's just part of the process.

After the surgery (the first week to a month) people feel the same things -- lots of regret, that kind of thing. It's all very normal. :-)

Congrats on getting a date.  I too waited about a year for a date and the last 2 months leading up to surgery were a roller coaster.  I can honestly say, now that I am 3 weeks out and feeling great, that it is all worth it!!  You will do great!!  Just keep laughing, loving, and praying.  Come here for support, and don't be afraid to make your needs known.
Good luck on the 2nd!

Congratulations on finally getting a date!  I'm sure that you've worked very hard to get to this point (since it's taken almost a year).  You can do this (and your body pretty much dictates that you *do* do this), but the emotions are still very normal and like other posters said, both pre-op and post-op you go through a LOT mentally and emotionally as well as physically.  I'm about 2 months post-op and some days I am filled with joy, others I am sadder than I've ever felt before, sometimes I really excited about my progress, then 5 minutes later I can be so frustrated that it's taking so long.

Like Patti, I strongly encourage the use of a therapist.  I always tell people we go to the gym to keep our bodies fit, we should go to the therapist to keep our minds and emotions fit.  I honestly don't know what I'd do without the support of my therapist.

Heya,

Michael here.  I waited three years to finally decide.  It is a big step towards getting healthy.  Yes, there are risks, but what are the risks of staying heavy?  Many.  That is what made me finally decide that this was for me.  My surgery date is August 18th!  Next Monday, I will be on the loser's bench and can't wait.

Take some time to relax and meditate.  What you are going through is totally normal.  Hang in there and feel from to PM me if you have a question or need to talk.

congrats on getting your date-you will go through all kinds of moods/emotions/questions for the next month-but you can do this!!  I am three years out and tell everyone this is the best thing I have ever done for myself-I wish I had done it sooner.  C'mon down to a coffee meeting or support group and meet your friends on this journey-one of the great side effects of this surgery is meeting some awesome new people!!
