scared questions
NO.
Not only would I NOT take back having surgery, I would do it annually if that's what it took to maintain the loss I've experienced so far. And I'm not at goal yet.
Being scared is totally normal, it's part of the process.
Yes, most people experience some level of hair loss. The best you can do is get all your protein in, maybe take Biotin (available by all the other fun vitamins), maybe use Nioxin, and pray. Some get it worse than others, and it sincerely was my BIGGEST (vain) concern pre-op! But it's WORTH IT!
As for taking the vitamins and all? It's part of the deal, and anyone who DOESN'T take them is asking for trouble. You don't HAVE to like them. It's OKAY to be digusted by the texture. JUST TAKE THEM ANYWAY, it's part of the whole deal that YOU are committing to. (although there are lots of options out there, you should be able to find something you're okay with).
As for B12 - do you KNOW you need to take the shots? I do the sublinguals from Trader Joe's. Slip one under the tongue, and before you know it, it's gone! NOT A BIG DEAL!
Keep coming here as much as you need for reassurance, hon - get to a coffee group if you can, a support group meeting, there are lots of options to get support and unconditional acceptance here. Making incredible friendships has been the MOST surprising benefit to this surgery! But you have to put yourself out there in order to find that. Easier said than done for lots of people, but I don't think anyone here would say they regret that, either.

Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
There is nothing that would make me give back the surgery!!! It's the best thing I've ever done. I wish I had done it 10 years ago.
My hair loss began about 3 mo. out. Luckily I had a lot so haven't had to panic yet. I have long hair so it's more noticible on the floor and handfuls do come out in the shower - but everybody is different on this one.
I do not get b12 shots. Won't get my labs done until next month. Right now I just take the sub-lingual. I was a vitamin taker before surgery so don't have a problem taking vitamins for the rest of my life. Just know that you do not have a choice...you must take vitamins or your body will suffer the consequences.

I would do this again in a heart beat! Taking your vitamins and calcium is something you need to make a lifetime committment to do. I give myself a B12 shot on the 1st of every month and have had no problems doing it. I can still eat the foods I really enjoy and can still cook meals, ut modified to fit my new lifestyle. It is one of the best things I have ever done for myself. I love the new me! Good luck with your surgery, but understand its a lifetime committment. Being scared is a very common emotion.
I'm with Darla - I'd do surgery EVERY YEAR if I had to!!! It has saved my life in so many ways and I'm not even close to my goal yet. My hair loss was fairly minimal. Supplements are just a part of life - even if you don't have surgery. I was taking almost the same OTC vitamins/minerals before surgery, so it was no big change. I also take the b12 sublinguals and must admit I rather enjoy the taste. Most of us are very scared before surgery. Heck...we're even scared after surgery. But that's totally normal. I'd be more worried if you weren't scared :)
I have NEVER regretted having RNY surgery. I was blessed with no complications after, though.
My hair has always been thin, but I did not see any noticeable loss, like bald patches. I did take biotin and other B vitamins to prevent that. I get a B12 shot monthly and it's nothing more than a pin ***** My doc is great about keeping tabs on blood chemistry, so every 3-4 months I have major blood testing done. I have been deficient in iron and took supplements to fix that. Later on I was deficient in vit. D and took supplements to fix that. During the winter I became deficient in B12 and just got the shot every two weeks. Everything is fine now--but my doc keeps a close watch. .
Here in Thunder Bay the pharmacy where I do business has a 'health technition' (SP?) who studies in particular nutrition of WLSers. I trust this guy's suggestions implicitely. He has given excellent advice about calcium, B vits, iron, and the like.
Just be sure to research and understand what's going to happen. Good luck. I'll be thinking of you!

I would do it all over again. And the vitamin thing? It's NOT a big deal. The trick is to make it become a habit...then it's second nature. NOT everyone needs to have B12 shots...that is not a given. Many people do just fine either without it or a sublingual or a tablet. The key is that it has to be monitored. Start taking vitamins and calicium now if you havent'. I use 14 day pill planners and load them up with everything I take daily...makes it really easy.
I'm a little over a month out. I haven't even noticed any hair loss but I have a lot of hair! I do the B 12 once a month because I didn't want to add another pill to the ones I already take. I have them scheduled with the injection nurse at my clinic and it takes like 2 minutes and I'm done. I just don't like giving myself shots and my dr perferred that I go in. I thought the same thoughts... maybe I don't need this... but when my husband took my before pictures I realized I needed it... and if I didn't have this where would I end up. Each year I went up another size.... when would that stop... feel free to message me if you have questions... like I said I"m only a little over a month so the feelings of just being in surgery are fresh and I"d be happy to answer any questions!
