I always thought the malabsorptive part stuck for life...this was new to me...were any of you told about this or did you ask your surgeon or bariatric nurse about the malabsorptive component to your surgery? What did they say?

I was told it didnt last forever...that our bodies compensate for it later.  Thats why if you dont hit it hard in the "honeymoon" period by creating good and new habits it will be harder later.

I knew that it wouldnt last forever... :)

So much we dont know... wow.... I think one can do all the research they can but still... there are little things that will pop up and things you wont know until you are there.

Amy,  I am going to make a point to ask our nurse at the next PNC meeting about this, I may even send her a quick little note as it is not for another 2 weeks.  Thank you for posting this and we will see what Barb says!  ~Nicole

Amy~I just sent an email to the Bariatric Surgery Team at PNC, where I had my surgery, asking them to please clarify what happens with regard to our malabsorption.  Hopefully they will respond today, but whenever I receive the response I will post it.  ~Nicole

I was aware that the malabsorption component of the RNY does eventually diminish SOME - as the body adjusts and makes provisions to compensate for the changes.  But there will always be SOME malabsorption, thus the need to ALWAYS take the vitamins!

As many have said on that thread as well as this one, the IMPORTANT thing is to use the tool to establish a NEW RELATIONSHIP with FOOD!  Eating to live, rather than living to eat!

I hope people aren't going to allow themselves to panic because of this little factoid...

I did know that, BUT only from reading OH, it wasn't ever mentioned by my doctor.

I knew it didn't last forever.  That is why the first 6 monts is so crucial and my surgeon made my pouch real small.  I can only eat a cup of food at the most unless it is straight meat, then it is less than half a cup.  I do still dump at almost 6 years out which totaly shocked my sister in-law who is a nurse.  Everyones body is different I guess.  I don't dump as severly as I used to, but I still do, and I believe that is part of it....don't quote me as I just know things from my own experiences.

Just this past Monday I had my 6 month appointment with my nurse Dorothy at PNC and she told me after 2 years our bodies will learn how to absorb calories again.  This is why its important to get in healthy habits now so when that time comes it will be easier to adjust.
