first roadblock

I hit my first roadblock today. I called Dr. Rupp's office and they told me they require a 41 BMI and I have a 39. I also don't have any co-morbidities.  Tomorrow I will try some more surgeons to see if they have the same requirement.

What does your insurance require?

That I be 100 lbs. overweight. Ins. co. said nothing about BMI, Dr. Rupp's office said that.

Hia, I believe you do need the co-morbidities for 35-39 BMI for most docs and most insurances unless you pay for the surgery yourself. I have a BMI of 39 but I have Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholestrol as well as joint and back problems and many other things. I was denied 2 years ago and I am exactly the same only 7 lbs heavier and on higher doses of meds and more meds so it will be interesting to see if they approve me. I will let you know.

Hmmm I am seeing the same group as you do, I have a BMI of 38-39 but with comorbities, do you think that they will tell me the same thing??? I go on thursday to talk to the bariatric nurse.

I doubt they will say the same thing to you since you have co-morbidities. We'll see what other surgeons tell me, I'm not giving up yet!

I went through the program at HCMC and my BMI was below 40. I did have issues w/ongoing lower back pain for years and knee pain. They said that those were also considered co-morbidities. Just a thought....

update - I called HCMC and will be going to the info/nutritional class next Wednesday.
