Okay, this is my very first time here so I'm a total Vegas Virgin. I am applying for a job with LVPD and today they gave out written tests and narrowed the numbers down from about 50 applicants to 10. Tomorrow, me and the other 9 have oral board interviews, then I fly home, try to get some sleep because on Wed I work all day at my real job then go to Eden Prairie for a concert, then try to get sleep again so I can get up for my wonderful experience at the U (see earlier post).
I have to say something kinda funny about Vegas. If you have been here you will know exactly what I'm talking about. Depth perception on the Strip is WAY off. The hotels/casinos are SOOOOOOO big that they look like they are only a block or two away, but end up being like a mile or 5 away. I had decided to walk to my testing center from my hotel because it didn't seem that far on a map and I didn't want to pay for parking. I don't mind walking and do it for my main exercise, so I didn't think it would be a problem. I wore the total wrong shoes for walking and it took about 10 times longer than I planned, plus it's like 200 degrees here, so I got really dehydrated. Wasn't bad enough to cause a prob other than "WHERE IS STARBUCKS?" I walked back to McDonalds (like a mile away) after I found out where I was going since I had time and apparently MD' has gourmet coffee now.
I was really tired and needed the coffee and didn't mind drinking it in the heat (it stayed warm for about an hour). My flight got in really late on Sunday so I didn't make it to bed until about 3 am your time. It didn't help that the pilot aborted the landing seconds before we were SUPPOSED to touch down. I guess it's a common thing in Vegas to have extra planes on the runway. Good thinkin I thought.
Part of my written exam (about 10 questions) was on ENGLISH SYNTAX and communication skills. It seemed to me that they were ruling out any second languagers. But even I, with a MASTERS in communication, found that part challenging.
Okay, nuff said...off to bed now. This place is WILD. I can't tell you everything...but I'm not spending ANY money except on a couple of tshirts for the chilins.

Good luck with everything! I was in Vegas this time last year with girlfriends and will be there again next week! It's a blast but I'm not looking forward to the heat.
If you get a chance, Margaritaville has great food. Also there is a Starbucks not far from there but I'm forgetting what hotel it's by right now. My memory is not what it used to be.

Good luck on the testing.
As for Vegas and the walking...I only have one word to describe our first time in Vegas....
Blisters!

Yeah, that's what I was gonna say - BLISTERS! One does NOT want to explore Sin City wearing new shoes, that's for DARN SURE!
CONGRATS on making the top 10 - I'm saying a prayer and doing my lucky chicken dance that the orals are going well today! I do NOT want to see you move to Vegas, but I DO want you to be happy and fulfilled, so - I guess this one isn't about ME.
Let us know how it goes! I HOPE you don't have to wait an eternity to hear from them!!!
(in the absence of an actual CHICKEN smiley dude, here's the dance -->

Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
Hey Paul I moved from Minneapolis to Las Vegas 2 year ago I love it. I work for ESPN here it is a change but a good one. We live 15-20 minutes from the strip its just like living in a suburb when you live here you dont really go to the strip. I work in the entertainment field and go to alot of media events etc but for the most part unless i have a work event or we have company in town it doesnt even seem like you live in vegas. You can email me at [email protected] if you need anything.
Thanks
Kristine
