Having a hard time

So it's a week out, the pain is gone, more just tenderness in the incision spots. Got my tube out today so that makes me feel a lot better. But I broke down tonight, the liquid meal is getting really hard. I just want something with substance to it. I know this is part of the deal when I signed up...  I know a lot of it is psychological but I'm having a hard time. Plus when you are recovering you see food commericals ALL day!! Thanks for the help and support through this tough time. I can't wait for purees!!

Okay, first thing you need to do is TURN OFF THE TELEVISION!!!  It is evil, with all the food and restaurant ads...   Second - remind yourself that this phase will only last a short while!  And it is crucial to your pouch, giving it time to heal, while jump-starting your loss.  You WILL be able to eat nearly anything you want again someday - if you're lucky, your pouch will rebel at the evil foods, but the healthy things you like WILL find their way back into your life!  It's worth waiting for it.   And never again in your life will you be SO BLOODY EXCITED for PUREED FOOD!   Refried beans with cheese!!!   Ever get fired up over that before?  ENJOY THE DICKENS OUT OF IT WHILE YOU CAN!!!   Liquids DO get really old.  I was SO SICK of the SWEETNESS of all the protein drinks!!!  Do some broth, if you haven't already, just to mix up your flavors a bit.  Chicken broth was like PORTERHOUSE STEAK when I was in the LD phase!!!   It's hard.  No arguing that.  But it is SOOOOOOOO worth it!!!!

I completely understand what you're going through.  The first week post-op I was really focused on foods.  I will be 3 weeks out in a couple of days and I have to admit that I already focus less on it.  I do have cravings and I do think about food, but it will be different in a way that is difficult to explain.  For me, it actually happened when I started to eat solids again and started to eat around other people.  Whenever I am eating with someone that hasn't had the surgery I see them eat their meal and it's not that they eat excessive amounts but it is just so much more than I could eat in a meal, in in a day, heck probably in a few days.  When I see their food I just get the feeling that I don't want that - that I don't want to eat that much food and that I'm content with what I do have.  I hope that you get to move to purees and solids soon because I do believe that it will make you more content in the long run and you can get a better feeling for your pouch and a better understanding of just how little food it takes for you to feel satisfied.  Honestly, I do my food journal at the end of the day and I always go into the journaling thinking that I was a complete pig that scarfed down WAY too much food.  Then, when I've entered everything in, the journal tells me that I ate between 300-600 calories.  It totally puts things in perspective. I wish you the best and I'm here if you need anything at all.  It does get better and you will feel better and try to avoid the food commercials as much as possible.

Thank you so much for the advice. I agree I know it will get easier when I can put something with a little more subtances in my mouth. Hell...carrots... celery... SOMETHING. That's the hard part it's not really wanting what the other person is eating it's that I can't touch it. I won't let myself. I want to make sure that my pouch is good and ready. I've had no vomiting no nauesa on the liquid diet. It's not even that I want A LOT... I know you guys understand.... thank you so much!!  You brought up a good point the liquid diet doesn't leave me hungry just leaves me blah... not full not satisified but not hungry. I think solids and purees will help me understand my pouch and how small or big it really is. THANK YOU! I'm feeling better already!

I am with you on being bored.  I was trying to explain head hunger to my mother in law that is very obese.  She didn't really get it!   My clinic said starting today I could have a tablespoon of cottage cheese, but that that tablespoon needs to take me 20 minutes to eat.   So just a thought?   New day,,, where do you do your food journal?

If you can just be patient a while longer, you will not regret it.  I was on LD through Thanksgiving.    But it was so worth it.  You're giving the new pouchy time to heal.  You will be able to add food slowly and you will learn to love and savor each and every bite.  Darla's right, those refried beans were the best I'd ever eaten in my life!!!  And scrambled eggs....I used to almost dream about them!  LOL! The LD is killer, but it's all psychological.  You can do this.  You need to do this.  The better you follow your doc and nuts orders the more successful you will be in the long run.  And the more weight you lose in the first few months, the less you have to struggle to lose later on after the honeymoon period ends.  This may seem hard to believe, but there will come a time when you will look back on this time and wish you could still lose as fast as you are right now, or wish you were unable to tolerate those evil carbs! Good luck and keep posting.  We're all here for you! Debi

This phase of the process is definitely the hardest!  Just keep reminding yourself that you WILL get to eat food again.  The head part of this surgery is definitely the most difficult part.  Keep your eye on the prize - all the benefits you'll get from going through this difficult phase.  I think of Darla's tag line - Obstacles are what we see when we take our eyes off the goal.  Just keep your eye on the goal - you CAN and WILL survive this.  Good luck girlie.

Work on getting what little variety you can...

cold protein shakes with ice in the blender to make a malt...
regular refrigerated protein drinks
room temp water
warm chicken broth (Unjury has chicken broth flavored protein powder that's not bad!
warm beef broth

I found the Better Than Broth paste to be really good.  and that warm salty drink really helped me cut through the sweet.  It became my staple at night and I still go back to it when I'm looking for something different.

*hugs*
