Ok I am a little over a week out and I am completely freaking out now.  I was so excited for the day to get here and now it is so close and I am an emotional reck!  I am a single parent and I am so scared to leave my kids behind.  I was on the main board today and someone had passed away from the surgery yesterday.  I think that is what has my mind going.  I know there are risks with the surgery and I have done my research but...... I just need to calm down and relax but it is so hard.  How did you guys cope?  Does everyone have these feelings?  I am just a basket case and trying to stay calm for my kids sake.  UGH! Shelly

All I can say is this. Today someone died from a auto accident will that stop you from driving? Also we don't know how she passed away.

You are completely normal in you thoughts everyone has them. Breath deeply and relax everything will be ok.

I am sure every mother here had the same worries, I did.  It's normal.  Being obese puts you at higher risks of death then having the surgery.   Breathe deep and remember why you are doing this.  And the (sorry for got his name) guy above me has an excellant point about the car accident and driving!!! HUGS

I think it's totally normal to be scared - you aren't alone! The good news is this is a very safe surgery and risks are minimal.  Not any more than any other surgery.  You will be fine!  Hang in there! (((Hugs))) Michelle

Hi Shelly, Dr Benn performed my laproscopic gastric bypass with gall bladder removal two years ago next month.  You'll be in such good hands with him, as well as the FVSD medical staff.  Did he explain to you how he perfected the surgery, and teaches other metro surgeons?  He is so knowledgable and I think he's just the best!  (I had been scheduled for the same surgery 12/14/01 at another hospital/surgeon, although ended up hospitalized the12/02/01 with MS diagnosis and was in the hospital for that and so figured I wouldn't be having WLS ever--until my GP recommended it at an annual physical March 2006. , I'm single, no kids, and was confident the entire four months prior to the scheduled surgery .  But, the night before, I freaked and listed my requests for my  cat, belongings, and finances/investments.  It's perfectly natural to have fear, and I agree with the preceding posts.  Breathe, breathe, breathe!  Think positive thoughts, and find things to occupy your mind:  journal, read, watch your favorite movies/TV shows, Spend fun relaxing time with your kids;  reassure them this surgery is for you to become healthier and to be able to spend active time with them very soon!  Saying prayers for your peace of mind!  You'll be amazed how silly you'll feel when you come out of recovery at thehospital.  Hugs galore, Patti

I didnt know that he perfected the surgery or taught other surgeons.  I already had tons of confidence in him and now I even have more.   Thank you for letting me know that! Shelly

Yep -- normal!!!  We've all been there and done that right with you.  But you stand a better chance of dying on the way to the hospital being hit by a bus!!!  This is part of the ride.

Try and think of all the things you will be able to do with your kids after you have the surgery.  Think about how you will have more energy to play and have fun with them and be the active mom you want to be.

Focus on the benefits - like the others have said - everything has its risks.

Best wishes!
