I am so confused.  I thought that we weren't supposed to have any soda anymore after surgery.  I'm not judging just curious, cause I really want one.  I've been soda free for at least 2 months now, but for some reason have been really craving either  a Coke or a Mountain Dew.  I was reading on the main forum and some people seem to have it 3 times a day....I know the sugar is too much and I know I'm better off not having it but what if??? My doc and nut both say absolutely NO carbonation.  Period.  So, I avoid it.  If I want something flavorful, I have about 7 different flavors of Crystal Light or off brands and I'll drink one of them. Each doc and nut is different.  Maybe check with your nut.  I've heard that the carbonation is bad for the old pouchy.  I'm not sure why. Debi

Mine says the same thing.  I plan to stick to no soda and I enjoy the crystal lite packets also.  I'm just wondering why doctors are so different sometimes, you would think since they all practice the same surgery etc the advice would be the same?  Just an observation.

My clinic says no carbonated drinks -- it bloats the stoma so you can eat more and of course... pop is no good for you. Here's my 2 cents.... I used to be a Coke addict... I am still a carbonation addict, but I do NONE of it. I know sometimes that if you 100 percent cut something out of your diet, you crave it 100 percent more. So here is what I did.... I have had pop once since I had surgery. Once. I bought an 8 oz glass bottle of Coke... and instead of a meal, I drank it half-flat...slowly enjoying it. That was all I needed.  The next time I have one will probably be another 3 months or so. Some people can handle a little bit once in a blue moon... for others... that's a slippery slope, from what I have read.

Good question though!

Robyn~You know I have been wondering the same thing lately about why the programs are so different in what they allow/don't allow.  I know that my program states no carbonation because it can stretch the pouch and I have heard from those who tried it that it is very painful.  Good for you for turning back the Crystal Light!

One of our fellow OHers explained t me that if you put a balloon over a bottle of pop, it would blow up the balloon!  This is a visual that sticks in my mind.  We don't need to deal with that.........so, I too miss diet coke with lime.  I was addicted to it.  It is the one of the few things I have learned to let go of...not easily however!

I'm sorry I just have to comment on this as it is one of my pet peeves and I just want to clarify this. Yes, pop is not good for you. Even with diet the carbonation can make you feel bloated and uncomfortable. Also, it's not very hydrating especially if it has caffeine in it, it's actually helping to dehydrate you and as you know we all have to keep hydrated. The truth of the matter is that soda will absolutely not blow your stomach up like a balloon. The fault with this theory is that your stomach has 2 openings. What if you took that same baloon, put it over the soda bottle and then cut another whole in the other end? Nothing, because the gas is just going to escape. Also, our stomachs are much stronger/thicker than a balloon, so it's just not a good analogy all around. So in closing I'm trying to say that it's true pop is not good for you and should probably be avoided (trust me, I know it's hard, and I've fallen off the wagon a few times with it) the reason for that is NOT because it will blow up your stomach! Just wanted to clear that up.

Good to explain this.  I will keep the picture I have in my mind as it helps me stay clear of the stuff.   It is the one thing I really stick too....   But it is good to understand it this way too...makes sense!  :O)

Yup....no carbination..no soda for me. I just remind myself that I wanted this surgery and promised my doctor and Nut that I would follow their rules and I do.  Everyone has to make their own decisions. I am just stating what I feel is best for me. Hugs, connie d
