Flying- Airplane seats
Hello everyone! I am flying for business on Wendseday and am nervous about the airplane seats. I flew last year pwith no problem but I have gained about 20 pounds since than. Has anyone had any problems? Need seatbelt extenders? I am soooo embarassed but I know that is life... at least for a few more weeks :-)
Oh yea- I am 5' 4" about 250 (for comparison)
Thanks!!
Shelly
Hey Shelly. I think you should be A-OKAY!
I flew to Hawaii in Jan.... and was 304lbs and 5'4. I fit...snuggly...but didn't need a belt extender.
I am excited...because I am also flying (Monday...back to Hawaii).... this time at 270lbs!
When I was 250, I fit just fine..... tight on the legs of course....but the belly was just fine.
Isn't it just amazing, in a sad kind of way, the amount of STRESS those damn airplane seatbelts cause us??? The humiliation of having to ask for an extender? Sheesh...
Last time I flew anywhere was last August, to CA. I was still right around 300, but I didn't need an extender on that trip - had an inch or two to spare! That was a little more than 3 months post-op. Tomorrow I'm flying to Atlanta, and I'm actually looking FORWARD to the flight!!! No extender needed here, and DAYUM - I may even get to put the tray down!!! YEE HAW!!! I'm thinking that my legs may even fit better - given the shrinkage in my butt (I'm 5'11", and have always been CRUSHED into the seats - GOD FORBID I get stuck behind someone that wants to recline - GOOD LUCK WITH THAT, SWEETHEART!!!)
Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
I know asking for a seat belt extender is embarassing, but do it even if you CAN squeeze into the seat. If you are that snug in your seat you cannot move. I now can squeeze in without an extender, but with the extender I am more comfortable (as much as I can be in an airplane seat) and I have enough room that I can pump my legs and not worry about DVT. sigh, its all always something. Just my perspective. Enjoy your flight, regardless of what you do.

When I was about 300 lbs the only time I needed an extender was flying on Delta. Last month we flew Delta again I'm 5'8" and I was about 245 I fit but it was closer than I thought it would be. I think it kind of depends on the age of the plane and the size of the plane too. If you are really nervous about it what I do is pick a seat either in the front or back where the attendents stand then you can be more descret when asking for an extender they are pretty descret too when they give one to you.
