I'm struggling a little bit with food and portion size. And I thought that if people around my surgery date would share there typical day, it could maybe help me. PM me if you don't want to post on here. Just wondering if you would share with me a typical day of food and portion size, what you drink and how much, and how much protein you get in. Thanks in advance. Kelly

Hi Kelly, Surgery Oct 30 so 7 months out. Here's my average day... not very good but it's what I do.  Warning though:  My weight loss has slowed dramatically and I know it's because of what I'm eating. * Get up around 7-8 and drink coffee with SF flavor and carnation creamer (3-4 cups) and I continue to drink coffee throughout the day and evening to total a pot and a half or so * Breakfast is eather a packet of oatmeal with a few raisins or dry cherries in it or a protein bar - generally aitkins PB * I try to get my walk in as soon as breakfast settles some, that is about 2 miles * come in and drink some water - 20oz or so * Lunch is whatever - a bag of buddig meat if I can stomach it, fried fish (2 pieces of crappie) if my son had a good night fishing, soup (half a can), etc. * my snacks consist of either 2oz of mixed nuts, a protein bar, a dozen baby carrots, a sf popsicle, a piece of fruit or a cheese stick.  I also have Kavli garlic crackers with cheese spread on them (had 3 yesterday) * Dinner once again is much like lunch.  Last night was spaghetti with whole wheat pasta and Ragu.  I also eat soup, stews (1/2-3/4C), sandwich with one slice bread and lots of meat.  Nothing earth shattering.  I'm hoping when life gets back in order i can start with real meals...  we shall see. Generally after dinner around 7-8pm I realize I haven't gotten much water in and start scrambling  lol  I'll get another glass in, gag, throw up my hands and want to beat myself up over it.  I'm not going to do that to myself though... I've done that for almost 50 years and I"m done with it. I hope this helped some.  I get wayyyyy too many carbs in throughout the day so am a really poor model.  Just trying to eat out of the larder right now though  :) Looking forward to seeing what others are doing as well!!

Lori, Thanks for responding.  It will be interesting to see what others eat, etc. I'm trying to get in more protein. I bought some New Whey protein bullets, 3oz. is 42g. of protein. I just tried the grape flavor, it's kind of like drinking liquid medicine. It's okay, not as bad as I've heard. And 3 oz. goes down in 5 minutes. I can't stand the protein powder, this is way easier for me. Again, Thanks for sharing. Hopefully our weight loss will pick up as we figure out our eating habits better. Kelly

Hi Kelly I'm about 5 months out.   I probably don't do things right and struggle with the protein and the portions sizes are getting a little harder to control.  I think we are suppose to eat like 1/4 of a cup but I can fit more than that in my tummy.   I also read somewear that we are maybe suppose to stick to 800 -1000 calories a day but have no idea if that is true or not.  I'm not even sure how many calories I have in a day. For breakfast I have fat free 100 calorie yogurt and half of a nature valley granola bar. For lunch it kind of varies but if i'm on the go which is often I have 2 sticks of string cheese and a bag of the 100 calorie wheat thins.   IF I have more time I go to the salad bar in our cafe at work and have what I call my protein salad.   It has probably 1/4 c. (maybe less) cottage cheese and 1/4 of a hard boild egg chopped up, a couple small chunks of grilled chicken and sun flower seeds (rather than croutons).  i will also add some carrot and cucumber slices too. Dinner is usually some kind of meat like 1/3 of a chicken breast, 2 table spoons of cottage cheese, and lately I've been eatting a lot of corn on the cob (1 cob at dinner).     I don't snack too often but usually if I do its veggies with dip or sometimes an apple with peanut butter.    I probably drink about 4 -16.9 fl oz bottles of water a day.   I do allow myself a diet coke maybe 1x or 2x a week.    I've been losing an average of 11lbs a month still but I'm sure that is because I still have more weight to lose and my BMI is fairly high yet. I absolutely hate milk so that is a part I'm stuggling with right now.   I get the lecture every time I see the nurse or the nut so I'm trying to figure out something I will drink that can take a place of milk.  I'm sure one of the many protein shake receipes out there would do the trick but just haven't gotten into the habit yet.

Kathy, Yes, I was told 1/4 cup also, then at 6 months a 1/2 cup. For awhile now depending on what it is, I can eat 1/2 to 1 cup of food. I think I usually eat around 600-900 calories. depending on the day........ I only lost 5 pounds this month......Hopefully I can turn this around and start loosing more again. I've been getting in about 60 oz. of water or more. I really need to bump that up with summer coming. I know what you mean with the milk, since surgery I'm lactose intoerant, but it is getting a little better, I can eat yogurt now without getting sick, and I can put it in my oatmeal too. I just can't drink it. Thanks for sharing this with me, I hope others post too, and we all can help each other out with idea's. Kelly

Hi Kelly, I've been reading posts on the main board where people suggest uping your calories (heathly calories-protein, fruit, complex carbs) a little bit to help with a stall.  Your body could be in starvation mode and not want to give anything up.

I was told not to worry about how many calories to shoot for, if I followed the plan I would lose.  1/4-1/2 C. portion, 3 meals-no snacks, 60g protein, 64oz. water, 3 milk/day. Today: B-1 egg, 3T. yogurt milk/carnation L-1.5 oz. tuna (lf mayo, dill, lemon), 2T. cottage cheese, baby bel (lf cheese) milk D- <1/4 C. perfect protein salad from co-op, 2T. cottage cheese milk I've been adding Crystal light to my water (duh) and it's much easier to get in at least 72oz. of water.  I didn't think I liked Crystal light...but I do now. I think it's helpful to see what others are eating.  Gives good ideas.  I also just went back to keeping a food journal.  I've been tired a lot lately and think I've been underestimating my protein intake.

Hi Kelly, I'm about 5 1/2 months out. 3 oz of protein with a very small serving of good carbs is what I try to eat at each meal. Breakfast:  pickle rolls with laughing cow cheese and 2 oz ham  1 wedge of cheese and pickle. snack :   1-2 slices american cheese individually wrapped

Lunch:  2/3 cup chili with shredded cheddar cheese  and 2 small pickles Snack:    Yogurt or fruit Dinner:    Taco salad with 3 oz beef and 1/4 c cheese with lighthouse salsa ranch dressing. Evening treat is Int'l coffee sf coffee yummy! I eat nothing after dinner at night but do try to dring about 64 oz of water.  Not always does it happen.  I find if I mix it up a bit and change up my food it will sometimes kick in the loss.  SOmetimes your body just does what it wants.  When I don't expect to lose (after steak the night before) I will lose 1/5 pounds.  Go figure.  I don't eat bread, pasta or snacks.  Snacks for me arer always good carbs or protein.  I average about 70 grams of protein a day with about 30 grams of carbs. Bonnie
