Spelt

Has anyone ever tried spelt food products before?  I picked up a bag of Newman's Spelt Pretzles last night as I had a craving for something salty and crunchy and they are really yummy!  They taste just like regular pretzles, but here is the big difference they have protien!  1 serving size is 20 pretzels and has 120 calories and 4 grams of protien!  There are also pasta, cereal, and granola spelt products out there.  I was looking at a company online and their angel hair spelt pasta for one serving has 9 grams of protien.  I think if I ever get brave and try pasta that this is what I will try because I will not have to feel bad about not eating protien.

Spelt, eh?  Never heard of it!  Makes me think of "smelt"!  Is it a grain?  Where do you find this stuff?  And THANKS for the tip!!!

Yup, ita a grain one of the older grains (it came before wheat) and it has more protien, dietary fiber and B vitamins than wheat.  I found the pretzles at Kowalski's last night, but you can probably find the products in organic/whole food stores and co-ops or in the organis section at Cub.  I am more than happy to share any of the neat food ideas I find.  It is amazing how many different sources of protien are out there it is more than just meat, dairy and beans!

Hi Nicolelynn, I have seen this in natural food stores, mostly breads made with spelt.  I think some folks that cant tolorate some sorts of flours can tolorate spelt???  Do you know how many carbs were in those products that you reference on your post?  I trying to watch my carbs more closely but I'm not always successful!  Just wondering if the carbs are different with the spelt products vs. regular stuff. THANKS!!

From what I could see the carbs are 23 grams with 4 of those grams being dietary fiber and I think that regular pretzles are about the same, but with only 1 gram for dietary fiber.  I have learned that carbs are okay so long as I pair it with a good solid protien.  I don't think the carbs change but how your body is able to use the carbs does because the body can extract more nutrients from the spelt than from regular wheat.
