Hi everyone, Well, I have found a surgeon, Sayeed Ikramuddin. I have heard great things about him, if any of you have any opinions of him, I would love to hear them! I go to his wls meeting on June 19th and then I will meet with him afterwards and I will also meet with a nutritionist. I am so excited, I just want to get this going. I am a little stuck though and I would love do hear your reasons for choosing the surgery that you did. I am most interested in DS, but my insurance may only pay for RNY. I am really ok with either, but I have do lean towards DS. I guess I am just wondering if I do have a choice between the 2, can someone offer me an opinion as to why I should choose you chose what you did? I understand that this is a sensitive issue to some, I am not asking in order to start a problem or anything. I believe we are all entitled to our own opinion and that is all I am asking, for personal opinions. I really don't care to know about any personal attacks or what not...I just want this to be strictly about the surgery!! Thanks so much!!

Dr. Ikramuddin is a wonderful surgeon of either procedure.

I strongly urge you to post this on the DS board and the RNY board....be prepared for strong feelings and emotions to come out in people...this is a very sensitive topic

obviously I chose the DS .....

again, this board is so on edge right now, I think this would do better posted on the RNY & DS forums - just to give this board some time to heal :)

GOOD LUCK GIRL!

PS:  YOU CAN FIGHT your insurance to get YOUR choice...do NOT let an insurance company make YOUR medical decisions

Oh goodness, I didn't realize that this board was "on edge" right now as you said. I have been sick for a while, so I haven't been up to date. Thanks for letting me know! I will post it on the other boards! Thanks so much for you help!

I really liked Dr Ikrummadin. He is a very busy man and has a no nonsense approach but you can feel his caring and compassion. He is a really warm type of person. He is sharp too! I am not real crazy about his Nurse Practitioner. The nutritionists and staff there are absolutely wonderful. I loved the folks at the U of MN hospital too. The only think I didn't like is that when I was out of surgery he called my parents on the cell phone rather than speaking to them in person, maybe it is a sign of the times! As far as why I chose RNY it is what I was the most familiar with and of course what my INS covered. But I agree you should check out the other boards and get info from other folks. Good luck to you and I will be real interested to hear how your visit goes in June!

CONGRATS!!  I had no knowledge of any other options other then RNY or LAPBand (I didn't know of this site until after my surgery).  So to decide between those two I weigh the pro's and con's of both to try to decide which one would be the most effective for me. I hope that helps you try to decide between your two choices, but either choice is a good one!  Best to you as you decide and let us know!!! HUGS

Having a strong faith in God will be the best peace you will find when making your choice!  AND YES get educated on both procedures and the after life of them.  I applaud you!  There is alot to consider in the WLS arena!  Hugs and ASK AWAY!

Well, I started out thinking that I wanted the RNY, but the more I researched the more I felt that the DS would give me a better chance of success.  It is a personal choice.  I know that the DS board on OH is great and can give you wonderful information on the DS.  I am meeting with Dr Buchwald tomorrow for his seminar and I am going for the DS.  He is in the same clinic as Dr Sayeed, however he does many more DS surgeries, so that is something that I may reconsider if you are looking at the DS instead of the RNY.  My BMI is high in the SMO category and that is one of the main reasons why I have chosen the DS.  The D statisticaplly shows a higher success rate of keeping the weight off long term.  There are many studies that you can read on duodenalswitch.com.  If you have any other questions please PM me anytime. Hi Candess Congrats on finding a surgeon you feel confident with and your upcoming surgery.  Dr. Ikramaddin is a fantastic surgeon with very very few complications.  He is an excellent surgeon with a great reputation!  His bedside manner could be improved on, though.  He never came to check on me post-op in the hospital......but maybe it was because they put me in the cardiac wing and not the bariatric floor because of my heart concerns.  I felt kind of bad that he didn't come talk to me or to my husband at all, though.  But as long as he was an excellent surgeon, I got over it. His nurse practitioner is a b**ch, though.  I put up with her because I HAVE to see someone for my check-ups but she has the personality of a rock going through PMS.  But you can do it!  If you see her prior to surgery, though, don't let anything she says discourage you.  I think she enjoys tormenting pre-op people.  Ignore anything bad she says and trust your own mind and your surgeon's. I chose RNY because it was the ONLY one I knew anything about pre-op.  I didn't investigate anything before....learned it afterward.  I've been very happy and healthy since my surgery so I am fine with my choice.  It's an individual choice, though, so go with whatever makes you feel safe and comfortable. Best wishes!
Jolene
