Hello! New here....
Hi - my name is Karla, and I was referred to this website by Fairview Southdale. I haven't had surgery yet, but, hope to in the next couple of months. My next step is to make a date with the surgeon, then submit to insurance. I have Preferred One, so, apparently they are very easy and quick. I have scanned the website for quite some time, never feel comfortable enough to introduce myself, but, everyone seems so nice here - so - here goes!
I'm married and have one daughter, 3 1/2. She was adopted from China. I'm currently in nursing school, and my husband is also a critical care nurse.
I have just a ton of questions, but, don't want to bombard people with questions they probably have answered time and time again. But....if anyone is so inclined - here goes:
How did you tell you children? How did you do with the weight restriction?
If you had your surgery at Southdale - how was your experience?
How in the world did you lose your pre-surgery weight???
Can anyone come to the meetings you have? I sure would love to have a support system in place, and the support groups are hard for me to get to with evening school.
Any good protein shakes to recommend?
Does anyone here have any experience with Preferred One? How long did it take for approval?
It is a pleasure to meet you all and thank you for letting me share in your journey. ~Karla

Karla,
First off, WELCOME......This is a wonderful and caring board and I'm glad you introduced yourself.
I just told the truth, That mommy hasn't been feeling well and I'm going to have surgery to make me better, and that I won't be able to eat much for awhile. etc. I also said Mommy's going to loose this weight and then we can play more, etc.
Going to the dietition and the phycologist really helped me loose my pre-surgery weight, I only had to loose 8 pounds but lost like 20 pounds. I was determined to make this work, plus my surgeon said if I didn't loose he couldn't do the surgery.
Yes, anyone can come to meetings. Plus we get together on our own for coffee groups all over the place, Maple Grove, Eagan, burnsville, north branch, etc. This is really where I learn the most, just talking to others that are farther along than me. Plus it's a fun time.
I haven't found a protein shake that I like......Sorry......
Good luck to you on your WL journey. Kelly
HELLO!!! My fellow Southdale friend!! Which surgeon are you going with? THey are all great! I LOVED my experience with them! Southdale reccommends bringing your support! As far as protein shakes that is personal! I had trouble findinf one I could tolerate for more then 2 days! As far as telling the kids (I have a 7,5,and 3yr old and I am 15 months out) I told them that mommy was going to the hospital for a few days and that she will have something done to help her lose weight. Made it simple and they were all ok with it! THe weight restriction as lifting them is I just made them get into my lap. That's all that I can answer!
Welcome and best to you on your journey!!!
Hugs!
