Changing eyesight & WLS

I was thinking about getting contacts since I actually like the way my face looks now, but my mom mentioned that I should wait until I am further out because a friend/co-worker of hers went through five pairs of glasses while she was loosing weight.  Has anyone else heard of this?

I say go for it!  I got mine before my surgery and my vision was never affected by WLS.  I was out of contacts and wearing glasses for a couple months while in the hospital recently.  I finally got to the eye doctor and got some more contacts - wow, I really missed wearing them!

Go for it....my eyes haven't change and I wear contacts and sometimes glasses.  I find five pair really hard to believe....there had to be something else going on there. I was diabetic and didn't have any problems and everyone told me my eyes would change so much. Hugs, connie d

I'm no expert, but my impression is that occular problems due to WLS are a major deal, and rare.  I wonder if your Mom's friend spoke to her surgeon about her rapid sight changes?  It could be a sign of some very serious nutrition deficiency's.

Interestion question and I think it's been asked before - I only remember because I was the ones that responded that they did have eye changes after WLS.  I had lasik in 2001 and had NO problems after the surgery. After WLS, I now have glasses, and my vision seems to be changing still - 2 1/2 years out. My astigmatism has gotten worse in both eyes and my distance has been affected in one of my eyes. I've had to get 2 new prescriptions in the past couple of years, and I notice that I'll need another one when I qualify for another free pair (November).  There were at least a couple of people on this board that this has happened to, so I don't think I'm the only one.

I think once things slow down I am going to make an appointment and go in and check it out.  I had contacts when I was 16, but they didn't work so well because my eyes were really sensative, so I figure I will give it another shot.

I've worn contacts for darn near 30 years, and have not had any problems since WLS.  But I have heard that it is possible - in large part due to the amount of fluid in our bodies.  Perhaps of we're getting all our water in, we're less likely to have issues? That having been said, eyes just naturally change a LOT over the course of a person's life.  I used to have astigmatism really bad, I was wearing toric lenses for it.  I go in every year because of the diabetes, and out of the blue about 3 or 4 years ago, BAM!  No more astigmatism!  My eyes changed shape, and I've been able to wear "normal" lenses ever since!  So I think whether or not changes in the eyes can be directly attributed to WLS is probably questionable, at best.   Obviously, that's a question you'll want to discuss with your eye doctor, but I think it's WAY COOL that you're wanting to put your face OUT THERE, instead of behind glasses!  As a matter of fact, I'm thinkin' that qualifies as a WOW moment!!!
