Is coffee OK?

Do Any of you that have had surgery still drink caffinated coffee? I am pre-opp and I drink coffee every day. I would have to say that it's going to be very hard if I have to give it up forever. I do know that it effects iron absorbtion and all, and it dehydrates you, but is it so bad to have a couple cups in the morning? And I know that your not supposed to drink with your meals, but is it ok to drink a protein shake with coffee? I got into the habbit of drinking my slimfast or protein shake right along with my coffee for breakfast. One sip coffee~one sip shake, will this cause problems after surgery?

My personal experience is that coffee is fantastic post op.  I never even drank coffee preop, but now I can't live without it.

I'm with Al - I really wasn't much of a coffee drinker until LUCY got me hooked on going to the coffee get-togethers at Caribou!  Now, I drink it daily.  My hubby always brewed up a pot in the morning, filled his ginormous mug, and would pour the rest down the drain at the end of the day.  (couldn't buy into the idea of only brewing half a pot... doorknob.)  So now, I take a big mug of my own (with SF frou-frou creamer), and probably once a week I treat myself to Starbucks or Caribou or - my FAVORITE, Dunn Bros! As for with the meals?  Not such a good idea.  The liquids rule is because they'll flush your food through your pouch faster, which means you may eat more, you won't feel full/satisfied as long as you could have, and it may cause you to graze between meals if you're so inclined.  THAT is the hardest rule for me, no drinking with meals.  But I don't have any problems with COFFEE!!  (my cross-addiction!)

MY BAD, PEACH~!!!   All I knew back then was that I was scared crapless to show my face!  Felt very intimidated to go to a coffee shop, which I never did, to meet a bunch of people I'd never met, to talk about WLS, which I hadn't had yet!   So THANK YOU, BLESS YOUR HEART, I've been HOOKED ever since!!!

Darla, I am in the same boat that you were back then.  I want to go and meet all of these wonderful people from this board and talk to other people who have had this surgery and learn from them but, I fear that my weight is holding me back.  I am scheduled for surgery on the 29th of this month and want so badly to go, I just don't know if I can make myself do it.

Well bless your heart...  You have taken a GINORMOUS leap of faith by getting yourself through all the hoops to the point of having a surgery date - CONGRATULATIONS!!! Now, you have to have the gonads (second time I've used that word today...) to do all the other things you CAN do to make sure you are successful!  Coming here is DEFINITELY one of them.  Giving up pop, chewing everything thoroughly, drinking lots of water, all that stuff is good, DON'T WAIT to put those habits into play! But seriously?  DO NOT let your fears keep you from getting to a coffee gathering!!!  Everyone there has been through or is going through some version of the same WLS journey.  You will NOT find another group of people who are so unconditionally accepting of you AS YOU ARE, as well as HOW YOU WANT TO BE!!!  We laugh, we cry, we shoot coffee out our nostrils (okay, I maybe made that one up, but really, it's only a matter of time before it happens...) - you will NEVER REGRET IT. Seriously - is there anyone here who has regretted going for coffee with other losers???  Speak up!   (Disclaimer:  If someone by the name of HARTZZ speaks up here, you have to take him with a grain of salt.      )

Thank you guys so much!  What you said to me really makes sense and I know that this would be a good thing for me to do.  I will watch the board and find out when the next meeting in my area will be! THANK YOU!
