Lifetime Fitness and working out

I joined the Eagan Lifetime in Janurary this year to get my butt in gear and lose more weight.  I was working out 3-4 times a week between 30-90 minutes a time.  I had a personal trainer who was helping me a ton but he quit Lifetime last month.  In Feb. this year I got a really bad cold and couldn't breath, I had to be on inhalers and medicine and all that jazz.  So, I couldn't work out for over a month.
I just got back into the swing of things.  Walking on the treadmill up to 30 minutes, using the rower for 3-5 minutes and then using the arm bike for 15-20 minutes.
What I'm wondering is, where do you all work out and what type of workouts do you do?
Peace out ~ Tara

Meh? Working out...  sucks.  I do not do an activity that gets nothing done for me save for taking my money and getting my sweaty. Now if I need to get somewhere my first two goto means of transportation are walking and biking. If I can walk there I will.  If walking is too far, I will get on my bike and ride there.  I also do both of these activities if I need time to clear my head.  If you are concerned that a bike might fold under you because of your size, I will refer you to Scott Cutshall and Large Fella on a Bike http://istanbultea.typepad.com/ and use his recommendations for getting a ride under your butt. I have 2 bikes, a recumbent that is like riding a lawnchair and a Surly Big Dummy.  Both are long and designed to haul lots of stuff (groceries, lumber, kids, spouses etc.) Now I am not recommending that you drop all of your current workout activities and get a bike.  I am recommending that you do something.  This is what I do. fred

Fred    A major part of my weight gain was due to severe leg injuries.  That at least was what started my weight gain.I had double knee replacements and other orthopedic work. Biking is not an option..even as much as I would like it to be.  I used to be athletic back in my 30's and now my legs won't do it no matter how cheerful I may be.  People who have had WLS have not gone through this journey because we are healthy. I know I fought against WLS for years. I am walking now, but unfortunately biking just is not part of my outlook.  I have joined lifetime and go to the one in Plymouth. The reason being is that facility has a pool I can walk into and I can WALK laps there.  I do not have enough strength in my legs to get out of the lap pool. So, what works for you is wonderful. It just may not work for everyone, and not because others (like me) are lazy. I am happy biking works for you   Thanks for listening.

Tara asked what I did, and I responded.  If you intended to preach a little lesson to me, you are preaching to the choir.  My situation does not work for everyone but it might work for someone.  I am sorry that it does not work for you.  An alternative to a bike might be a trike. Even a recumbent trike.  Then again, you might have to stick to walking.  What ever works for you is good.  And yes, I have had WLS.  I am not sorry that I did.  So please step off the soapbox and remember we are all in the same boat.

Obviously, a very touchy subject for me. That is my take, and maybe I just should be quiet today.

Tara, I think what you are doing sounds like a great way to start back.  I workout at the YWCA in Uptown and had my sister, who is a personal trainer, help me with my workout.  So here is what my workout looks like:

30-45 minutes cardio (usually the eliptical or treadmill) 30 minutes strength and conditioning alternating upper and lower body each day For my strength and conditioning my sister came to the gym with me and helped me figure out which pieces of equipment to use the number of reps and weight so I would refer back to what your PT had you doing with regard to that.

I hope this helps!

Fred I guess I am with you becasue I would think that Biking would be less wear and tear on your joints than walking even. My motto is kid that you are right what ever floats your boat for exercise is the right thing to do as long as you are being active like Fred and are able to contol your weight long term. Kid you are correct in that the majority of people that have this surgery are not healthy and never exercise or are active and thats a contributing factor to the large amounts of weight gain. I work out 4 to 5 days a week at lifetime in Lakeville doing cardio,Weights and playing racquetball and squash. I also run when the weather is nice becasue its good for my soul and gives me alone time to reflect and think.  The main thing I Preach is do something and work at your own pace but do something becasue I guarentee you after the honeymoon is over if you don't this will be a struggle to maintain.  Best of luck. Jim
