Bicyle Recommendation?

Does anyone know of a bike (not too expensive) that will hold my 250+ body?  I'd love to start biking again, but am afraid most aren't strong enough.  I've been looking online, but can't seem to find a site that gives weight limits on bikes.

Lois - maybe call places like Erik's or Penn Cycle and see what they recommend for the weight limit? We bought bikes from Erik's and absolutely love them but they were not cheap. And I'm over 250 but never thought about a weight limit...hmmm...

I posted this on LiveJournal and someone told me about a bike shop run by a guy who had a bike custom-built for his 501 lb. frame.  He's lost half his weight now.  I'm going to go there for help.  At least I won't be so embarrassed.  I had thought of Erik's, but am kinda shy about that.  And by "too expensive", I meant something under $500.  I've seen so many bikes close to $1,000 and I'm not willing to make that kind of investment right now.

Keep in mind that you are not going to be 250+ for long, so it may not be an issue.  250 lbs isn't really that much for a bike I wouldn't think....My 6'2 husband weighs 250+ and I wouldn't look for a special bike for him.  The thing special about his is that it would have to come in the house and boot him off his butt!

I guess I didn't really weigh much more than I do now back in the 70s when I was an avid bike rider.  And I didn't crush my purple & white banana seat shorty bike :)  lol  Man I loved that bike!  It's still hanging in my parent's garage, but I don't think it would be too kosher riding it anymore.

That is absolutely not too heavy for a bike. We have crosstrainers, with bigger tires and love to bike. Hopefully, you'll be peddling away before you know it--- that is if this snow ever goes away! Cindy

Even me, a diehard snow person,  am ready for the snow to stop already!

I really don't think you need to go looking for a special bike.  I bought mine years ago, at 350+, and it hasn't had any problems.  I would just recommend going to a bike shop vs. a Target or Wallyworld bike.  Mine's a Schwinn Cruising bike.  (Put a basket on the front end of it and the wicked witch theme from Wizard of Oz starts playing from the trees!)  But I love it - and I don't think we paid more than about $230 for it, although that WAS probably 8-10 years ago..

Maybe I can dig my old "Dorothy" costume out and wear it when I ride :)  lol
