First I have to say it~ thanks SO much to everyone here. I would not have the courage to finish the journey with out you and your support! You are all truly an inspiration to me! Second as so many of us are getting closer to the big day I am wondering if there is any advice/tips/tricks/suggestions that you know now that you wish you would have known then.  What helped you through the LD? What helped you through the nervousness? What would you have done differenty before/after surgery? Any tricks of the trade would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Kris.... Knowing that surgery was at the end of the LD was what helped me through it. I knew I needed to start new eating habits and this was the start of the best thing I ever did for myself. I kept myself very busy and spent as much time as possible with people on this board. I also went to as many support groups as possible. It helped pass the time so I didn't have time to be nervous. Cleaned a lot of closets and dresser drawers!! The only thing I would have done differently was that I would have done this surgery many years before!! Hugs, connie d

Kris, SF popscicles helped me through the first 5 weeks. I still have them once in awhile. Also I was a sweet eater, so SF choc. pudding was good. Nerves? I was a little nervous, I just kept telling myself, "This is for me to get healthy." But once the surgery day came, I was ready. Done different? I would have taken liquid vitamins. My Doctor didn't have me start vitamins till my 5th week, and now I'm low in B1 and Iron. Good Luck and I hope this helps a little. Kelly

Hiya there Kris, What a great question you are asking. (You are so going to be successful w/this!)

If I were to do this all over again, I would make triple sure that my companion and my angel were connecting. By not doing that, I causes a lot of stress for my family for a day.  I would also have pre-planned a variety of clear liquids AND full liquids for this challenging period. I have missed chewing so much more than I thought I would. I admitted to someone that I've cheated a bit here and there and she YELLED at me and told me of the seriousness of my "cheats" and now I thank her. I wasn't prepared for the liquid diet. Ummm. . . I would and did read tons of celebratory posts. How exciting to KNOW that these will be written by YOU THIS YEAR.  You are going to shine girl, even brighter than you do now. It's all GOOD.  Smiling for you. . . Cindy

You have gotten alot of great advice already!!!  One thing (or two) that I'll add: 1) DON'****ch tv after surgery!! (TONS of food commercials you don't realize until you can't eat!!) 2) B4~ I would have practiced eating SLOWER and chewing to an applesauce consistancy (still a battle for me at times thus foamies/ puke/ ect) 3) follow the rules to a "T".........instill the GOOD habits and stick with them cuz when the "honeymoon" is over it's a lot tougher!! 4) Relax!  Realize that you are going to have emotions ~the whole rollercoaster ride! 5) B4 and After~ find GOOD ways to deal with stress (or whatever may have triggered poor eating, ect) like a punching bag, walking, ect............Realize it's ok to feel the way you do, it's ok to be YOU!!! You are gonna do fine sweetie!!!  THe whole waiting part is the toughest! HUGS!

What would you have done differenty before/after surgery? I would say it's essential to develop good habits straight away.  Lots of water, vitamins and EXERCISE.  Remember, this is FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE advice/tips/tricks/suggestions Don't compare yourself to anyone.  Don't weigh yourself all the time, (once a week at the same time works for me), don't worry if you aren't losing like you think you should.  It will happen, but just not like you were expecting. It's not a plateau until you haven't lost pounds OR inches for 4-6 weeks.  Remember, everyone's journey is different. I think that's it it's amazing to see you and all preops go through this journey, you have a really talented surgeon, amazing support, how can you be anything but successful.

Hi Kris, it's thisclose and  you'll do great!  However, my WL cinic at FVSD did not require I do the liquid diet prior, only was told not to gain anything.  What really helped me succeed immediately post-op at home was that I'd stocked a shelf in a kitchen cabinet with the allowable full liquids (fat-free cream soups to strain--to which I'd added poultry seasoning to cream of chicken, or mushroom soups--tasted like Thanksgiving dressing!  Added Italian seasoning to cream of celery or tomato soups (be sure to totally strain all your cream soups!) S/F jello and puddings were good to have around.;  I'd even had and appreciated Gerber 1st and 2nd baby food applesauce (to which I added apple pie spice or just nutmeg, and a titch of Splenda.I even added flavor extract to  soy milk--Upon research done, I drank soy milk for about the first seven months then switched to 2%.  Fortunately, my appetite did not return until just over a year out, and by diligently following my program, was well enough into esxtablished habits that I have rarely had carb or sweets cravings.  Very important to start an exercise program now, and modify as you get farther out from surgery.  Initially, walk, walk, sip, sip, walk, sip.....it's all for the reason toward your successful journey!  And this will be a life-time journey, with ultimate destination of health, happiness, and life longevity!    Even at twenty months out, I continue doctoring up the s/f puddings to occasionally enjoy.  For about the first six months I continued lo-carb, high-protein drinks using EAS whey protein powder, having unflavored, vanilla, and chocolate.  I added protein powder to anything possible, to keep the protein intake up to par.  I found that using flavor extracts was smart, adding lemon, or raspberry, or almond, or French vanilla, or peppermint to a protein drink or even vanilla s/f pudding added variety, which all my life I've thrived on variety!  Each time I had, and still finish eating, I set my kitchen timer for thirty minutes so I know when to begin drinking water.  I occasionally add a little Crystal Lite or VitaSplash to boost some flavor.  Wow, this is long, but when asked for my help, I have so much to share!  I have notebooks full of 'recipes' for every phase of the journey, and am happy to share anytime!  Best of the best to you sweetie, and take a deep breath, it's definitely the ride of your life, especially when you'll have tons of WOW! moments all along the way--I even still have them, and love it!  Hugs galore, Patti

First -- you are welcome!!!  I think everyone needs to pass on their knowledge to help those who are after us.   Second -- Make a list of things you want to get done during the 10 days before the surgery and for the time you will have off after the surgery -- so you have a goal to concentrate on besides food.   I practiced the "rules" for two months before surgery so the 10 day LD was a breeze -- Once you get past the 3rd day, its all good!!!  Just stay focused on the prize.  Ten days -- psssh -- breeze compared to the rest of your life!!!   The nervousness -- no one can tell you how to handle those -- we all get them -- just go with the flow.  Cry when you feel like it, feel the doubt and look at the reasons you are doing this.  You'll get over it all and be ready the day of surgery.  It is totally normal -- that's what we'll tell you when you post about it!!! Done differently before/after surgery -- can't think of a thing!!!   XXOO
