Farrah,  I love it that your shelter doesn't declaw

Thanks! We also require that the cat be an indoors only cat, unless it was an outdoor cat when it was found/rescued. We actually don't have a shelter, so all our (80+) animals are in foster homes. I'm in charge of the cat fosters and cat adoptions. I'm super busy, but I adore it. It's very rewarding!

Please spay and neuter your pets!

I was going to suggest the claw covers, too - my boss SWEARS by them!  I've never used them, I have always declawed my cats - front only.  And have never had any reason to believe any of them suffered - they never limped or acted as if they had any pain, but I have a really good vet, too.   The foil works for most cats, too - you could tape a sheet to the couch before you go to bed, covering the areas he's scratching.  Use the heavy-duty foil, the light weight stuff might not bother him enough. Good luck!!!  I know I'd fill my shorts if I had a new couch and the cat ruined it!!

A friend of mine used double-sided tape to keep her cats from the curtains and furniture.  I think it worked.

HI I WAS A VET ASSISTANT FOR A FEW YEARS AND HERE ARE SOME OPTIONS/ADVICE I WOULD GIVE PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM.  THE DOCTORS I WORKED WITH PREFFERED DECLAWING YOUNG CATS BECAUSE OF COURSE THE OLDER ANYONE/PET GETS THE MORE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH SURGERY. THE COVERS FOR THE CLAWS ARE GREAT. I WOULD GO TO YOUR LOCAL VET HAVE THEM SHOW YOU HOW TO TRIM YOUR PETS NAIL THE CORRECT WAY AND SHOW YOU HOW TO PUT ON THE COVERS. THEY ARE CALLED SOFT PAWS THEY EVEN COME IN FUNKY COLORS. THIS WAY YOU CAN BUY THEM YOURSELF AND GLUE THEM ON YOURSELF. HUGE MONEY SAVER IF YOU DO IT!  THEY DO HAVE TO BE REPLACED BUT THAT DEPENDS ON HOW QUICK YOUR CATS NAILS GROW AND HOW DETEREMENT THEY ARE TO TRY TO CHEW THEM OFF. OTHERWISE THE CHEAPER THING TO DO IS JUST TRIM THEIR NAILS EVERY WEEK OR SO. I WAS FINDING MY OWN CATS NAILS HAD TO BE TRIMMED EVERY 3-6 DAYS TO TAKE THAT SHARP SPOT OFF. TINFOIL IS A GOOD IDEA ALSO. BUT I KNOW SOME PEOPLE WHO'S CAT JUST STARTED CLAWING A NEW SPOT. IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ON TRIMMING THE NAILS BRING HIM TO A GROOMER OR VET AND HAVE THEM SHOW YOU. HOPE THIS HELPS JLYYNN
