Have you checked out www.lapbandtalk.com ? It's a good source of information, but not as much T.L.C. as on here, from what I've observed so far. . .  Just my opinion, don't know for sure. I honestly do not think the band is the best. . . Just the best for me.  I L-L-L-LOVE IT!!!  (post-op under two weeks. Ask me in two years for the real test. LOL!) Cindy, again. Okay, I'm done.

your surgeon will help you decide too, but the lapband isn't usually a good choice if you have acid reflux.  What kind of hernia do you have?  It can be repaired at the time of your WLS, if it's a hiatal hernia some surgeons like to steer clear of the lapband.  Fast eating can be a problem for both the RNY and lapband, you will need to learn how to slow down and chew your food, and only eat until you are satisfied.  All things you will be taught through the surgery program you go through good luck

Yeah I was told that lap band can cause acid reflux to get better but it can make it worse. I have been tryin/working on the slowing down eating thing and to be honest it is hard. I have made comments to alot of friends of mine that We are geared to eat fast from when we were kids. At luch in elementary it's eat fast to get out and play. Middle school eat fast to get out and play and gossip on the cutes boy, Then high school.... go to the fast line grab the burger take it with you as you run out back to smoke and hear about the latest party for the weekend. Smoke free for 2 yrs 2 months . Had to toot my horn there. As I re read this,I feel old. If I knew then what I know now...... Take care Jill

Those aren't your only choices.  There are boards here for most of the surgery types.  I read them all just to see who was happy and who was miserable.  What's right for 1 person isn't necessarily what's best for you. I will tell you the worst things I know about both surgeries.  I'm not promoting either one.

Lap Band-fills can be expensive especially if you need several.  It's billed as the safest, least invasive surgery but people do sometimes have problems down the road that necessitate more surgery.  The band can wear a hole in your stomach or grow into another organ.  It's easy to eat around the band and sometimes very difficult to eat the lean protein foods you need.  I do know people who are banded and lost no weight or gained it all back.  Read the Allergan site(they make lapbands), they define success as losing 50% of your excess weight.  Don't know about you but I wasn't happy with that.  I do also know of people on OH who have lost more than 50% but I don't know them personally.  Statistically speaking, the band is the least effective surgery and it requires you to be on a low fat, low sugar, low cal diet.  The band is restrictive only. The RNY is a more effective surgery and patients are expected to lose about 75% of their excess weight.  It is restrictive and malabsorbtive.  Part of the small bowel is bypassed and you don't absorb all the calories you eat.  Mostly from fat.  You are not supposed to drink and eat at the same time.  If you eat concentrated sugar, you may experience dumping; a very real physical illness from concentrated sugar****ting your intestine.  There's no way to say for sure you will or won't dump.  Some people want to dump so they won't eat sweets.  Most RNY folks lose well and fast.  Some maintain their weightloss and others don't.  I have 6 coworkers who had the RNY.  1 got thin and it still thin 6 years later.  1 never lost even close to what she needed to lose and she's still SMO.  1 probably got to within 50lbs or so of goal and has stayed there.  The other 3 have regained 90% or more of what they lost.  The vast majority of the people here had the RNY.  It is the most available surgery.  RNY folks need supplements every day and should also eat protein.  Diet is basically low fat, low calorie, low sugar, higher protein. WLS of any kind isn't a magic bullet.  You still have to work at it.  And all WLS can be outeaten.  Pick what's best for you that will be the most liveable for the long haul.  Good luck!

After I did all the research it all boiled down to the fact that there was no way I wanted a foreign object in my body.  The fact that all of my body parts are still in there they are just sectioned off differently was something I could live with. When I would think of the lap band I kept picturing this this rusting away on my stomach.

It really is a personal choice because your the one that is going to have to live with it.

Good luck!

.Thanks. That's another thing I think about this foreign thing breaking down in me. Have you or anyone else heard of anyone having any allergic reactions to the band?  Thanks for the good luck wishes.  Jill

I don't personally know anyone, but that should be something you could look up.  There should be #'s that are on public record saying what % rates are for different problems.
