Hypoglycemia

Has anyone NOT been diabetic before surgery who developed hypoglycemia after surgery?  I have been testing my blood when I'm lightheaded, flushed and shaky and sure enough....below 60.  The normal range I was told is 60 to 120.  If you have experienced that how do you deal with it?  It hits me at anytime during the day,  sometimes in not so convenient times...like when I'm shopping, out with friends, driving, anytime really.  I have a follow up dr appointment on the 5th.  But I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this issue.  And if you have any pointers.

Hi Paula.... I was diabetic before surgery....now I have problems with my blood sugars being way to low. I have episodes too and they are always at the most inconvient times.

I am glad you are seeing a doctor soon. Let me know what he recommends. My doctor just has me checking my blood sugars twice a day...more often if I have an episode. Hugs, connie d

Hi Paula, I think you should check with your doctor before the 5th.  If you are running below 60 yoou could be running into some real problems.....especially if you are out driving.  I am a Type II diabetic that tends to fall below my guidelines just as you are describing.  My doctor tells me that my range should be between 80 and 120.  I get the shakey feeling if I get below 70.  The lowest I've ever been was 52 and my daughter called and told me to check my blood as I sounded like I was drunk and I don't drink.  I checked and sure enough was 52.  I keep orange juice on hand at home and I always carry glucose tablets in my purseif not for me for someone that might need along the way. Also, eating on schedule has a lot to do with your ranges.  I know it's not always easy to do, but I'm sure you will find a difference if you are not eating at scheduled times. I have several friends with diabetis and have never heard of anyone where there low range should be 60 with a high of 120.  Of course, I'm not a doctor.  That is why I believe that you should call the office to confirm what range you should be at at this time.  Also, who do you see for your diabetis.. Sometimes people have to see a specialist to keep a closer watch on things.  I see mine every 3 months; however, before getting a good control on it, I seemed to be going a lot more. Good Luck, Paula!   Please call your doctor tomorrow so you can track from now until you go in on the 5th....  If I can help in anyway, please feel free to e-mail me. Hugs, Granny Eileen

I think I should call my PCP tomorrow....Just now I wasn't feeling right....it is 65.  I ate a sargento light string cheese.  I wonder how long it takes for it to rebound?  Yesterday it was 58 when I wasn't feeling well.  I didn't have any problems, no diabetes before WLS.  Now I'm having a ton of problems including the lightheaded and pass out feeling when I'm sitting and stand.  I think that is from low blood pressure....I'm not sure...I'm gonna wait a half hour and test again.  I wonder why I'm like this.....I did go to the Dec 06 board and there is someone there with the same problem and there was a lot of good advice.

Hi Paula, String cheese alone isn't the best choice for low blood sugar - you need a few carbs along with that protein.  Try some crackers with the cheese or peanut butter or some fruit or just plain glucose tablets.  You don't want to overdo it and end up dumping (if you do), but if you're crashing with blood sugar, you need some glucose (sugar/carbs) to get it back up.   As a former insulin taking diabetic...I know how awful a crash can be. Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for the advice...my PCP didn't tell me how to resolve low sugar levels....I don't dump on sugars...but I don't want to overdo it either.   Thank you!!! I just tested again and it is up to 98.

I have been dealing with this for a really long time and was never a diabetic.  I always keep peanut butter and crackers with me.....Carbs and sugars.  Right now, I am doing a liquid diet, so I am drinking FF milk or a protein shake made with milk.  The only time it doesn't happen is when I stick to my post op plan to the letter...high protein ~ low carb. Good luck.  I know the drs at the U have been studying this in post op pt and there are some really good endocrinologists there to that are very knowledgeable.

Paula, the best advice I have for you is to check out this profile http://www.obesityhelp.com/member/meltingmamaish/ and click on her website. She has been going through seizures even. If your symptoms are not as severe, it may be worth it to take some time and read up on all the info she has given! It's really quite a lot. Good luck & good health wished for you!
