I was reading an article on www.startribune.com about the possible link between obesity and cancer.  I work with cancer research, so the speculation isn't anything new to me.  However, the next paragraph just about kicked me out of my chair. "In women, a weight gain of 29 pounds increased the risk of cancer in the uterus and gall bladder by nearly 60 percent, esophagus by 51 percent and kidney by 34 percent, the study said." Here is a link to the article  http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/health/15647252.html I'm going to order the article from the pjournal Lancet.  There is a lot of medical jargon in it that makes it difficult and quite boring to read.  If anyone is interested in an electronic copy of the article, PM me and send me your email address.  If there is anything significant that I find I will repost.  However, the star tribune article will likely have summarized the publication well enough. This proves yet another reason why WLS (or other ways of losing weight) is good for us.

Happy Friday to all my OH friends.

Thanks for the information.  When I went for my informational seminar in Dec. 06 they stated that there was a 40% drop in cancers among people who had wls.  I lost my dad to cancer 11 years ago.  He was 55 and SMO.  That was a huge deciding factor for me.

FOur years after having open RNY I was diagnosed with uterine (endometrial cancer). My oncologist/surgeon said the primary cause is obesity, which of course was an issue for me since college. Obesity causes the body to create more hormones and an excess of hormones can cause cancer cells to mutate into tumors.   She also said 1 in 35 women will get it--not great odds!  Losing weight certainly helps but the damage is often already done. But it is a very symptomatic cancer and if we are paying attention can be caught very early.  I was paying attention--within 3 days of symptoms starting I thought I'd figured out what it was (web resaerch) and had an appointment with my ob-gyn. Less than 6 weeks later I had a complete hysterectomy and 40 lymph nodes removed. Stage 2 grade 1B, and now cancer free without any chemo or radiation.

Congratulations on being a survivor!  This is proof of how important it is that we know our bodies and watch for changes! ((HUG)) **SUE**
