Oprah is anti-WLS, I heard this show was no different. Sabrinna, what was your take on it?

Did not like the show or how she handled it.   I started thinking a while back that she was becoming more supportive of WLS because she did at one time (not too long ago)  have a woman on her show who had WLS as well as Carnie Wilson and she even said that she was glad she did the show because it made her understand WLS more. Today she had teens on who all had it under the age of 18.  Although she didn't come out and say it, her responses showed that she did not agree with teens having it.  She did have a teen on as well who now struggles with addiction transference by drinking.   The part that I guess really made me mad is that she had this girl on there who made it into "Seventeen" magazine after she lost 100 and something pounds (which is wonderful for her).  When she asked the girl how she did it it was with running/walking on the treadmill and "of course" changing her eating habits.  Oprah praised her for being an inspiration to all teens as she ended the show while the four teens who had WLS sat on the couch with no praise being given to them.  I felt very bad for them.   Also, Dr. Oz was on, who I really have liked in the past.  He was very against teens having WLS because of the different changes their bodies will go through.  I can see where he is coming from.  Oprah asked him if this is what he thought things were coming too, where teens will use WLS to bypass the real underlying issues.  He stated at the end when the "Seventeen" girl was talking that he hopes she is what things will come too.  Her spreading the word about the healthy way to do it by eating right and working out.   So yah, I get that she isn't too fond of teens doing it, but I just felt bad about the manner in which she interviewed and talked with the teens.  That's my 2 cents.   If you want to record it, it comes on again at 12:37 a.m. on channel 4 again.  If you go here you can see come clips of the show... http://www2.oprah.com/index.jhtml

I agree. Oprah sounded very negative toward WLS. She has lost my respect. I don't think I'll ever watch her show again. I don't know... maybe.  Lori

I didn't like the show, either. I didn't even watch all of it. I don't think I know enough personally to have an opinion about WLS and teens. I know that teens are still growing and going through a lot of physical changes... but at the same time, I remember what it was like being an obese teen. It was awful - I missed out on a lot during those years. If anything, I am disappointed in Oprah. I know she doesn' t have to agree on everything people do, but at least give them the praise they deserve. She knows how hard it to lose weight.. and imagine taking on such a daunting task as a teenager. Very disappointed.

I'm selfish, impatient, and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you don't deserve my best.

I posted this on the lap band Oprah discussion: I was annoyed as well. They needed a bariatric specialist on the show. She did a show about obesity and had no obesity specialist on it. The multifaceted variables contributing to obesity were not presented at all. It felt like (to me) fat people are fat because they use food to deal with their issues and don't exercise enough.

I'm happy for the skinny Seventeen model, but MANY of us have lost weight, even multiple times. Even the kid with the lap band had previously lost 50 pounds but then regained it. Heck, I've been at my goal weight 3 times but never kept it off, even a year. So what will Dr. Oz and Oprah have to say to her 5-10 years from now when she's yo-yo'd the entire time? Of course, I'm not saying she will, but if you go with the statistics, she will.

On a side note, my son is eating baked beans, hot dogs and potatoes and I am on a liquid diet. I better get my shake......

What a negative take on this surgery!  I am very disappointed in the fact that Oprah didn't have a specialist on the show.  Ugh.  One step forward, two steps back because there are pepple out there that take Oprah's word as law.   Apparently ignorance is bliss.   Ok, rant done.   Tongue Out Jeanne
