Knee pain question

Hi everyone Hope you all are keeping warm during this cold weather you're having. I have a question for anyone who has had knee pain. I know that all the years I was super obese was not good for my knees. Even though now I've lost the weight, I am still having knee pain in my right knew. I'm noticing it quite a bit more because of being so active now.  Anywho......has anyone had any luck with taking glucosamine/chondroitin pills? There are the pills that are just that and there are also the ones with MSM.....Methylsulfonylmethane......which is supposed to help with the inflammation. I think I'm going to try this type since we're not able to take Ibuprofen or Advil for inflammation. Any thoughts on this or has anyone tried this and had success with aleviating knee pain? Or anything else that might have worked for you?  I'd really like to try something that will get the pain under control and I really, really don't want to have knee surgery    I will also check with my doctor in a few weeks if it isn't getting any better. Thanks guys for any info you can share with me. Hugs Peggy

Peggy, I would definitely talk to your doctor about this, but it sounds like you're already managing it the best you can. Your question brings up a good point about WLS.  I don't have anything that causes consistent pain, but it's funny because I even asked Dave (PNC nurse) about it.  I couldn't figure out why my body hurt so much after losing over 100 pounds.  I'm thinking, what's going on - is the lack of nutrition absorption causing this and he said the same thing you elluded to and that is that we're more active now.  We can get down on the floor more, because we're not afraid of looking like we need a crane to get standing again, we move around more now and consequently our new bodies just aren't used to  moving in the new ways so we get sore. I guess it's a good problem to have - but not necessarily one that we would have expected. Hope you can get some relief soon! God Bless

Hi Tracy Thanks for the reply. I love my weight loss but the knee pain sucks. I really enjoy being active, but lately I've been having more trouble going up and down stairs.......we have 37 steps to our apartment. I go up and down them, like 5 times a day......uggghhh. I'm going to try taking the glucosamine/chondroitin pills for 30 days like Jim said and see if that helps. Thanks Peggy

Peggy I take them every day and it seems to help out alot! Try them for 30 days and see if it doesn't make a difference. It did for me. Jim

Hey Jim Thanks for responding. You're a great person to get advice for on this, since I know that you run alot. Do you use the glucosamine/chondroitin with the MSM?  Do you take just 1 a day or more? Basically, how many mg's of each do you take a day? Thanks for the info. Peggy

I have chronic knee pain, an indirect result of having been broad-sided many years ago.  I brought this up with Dorothy at my 9 month, and aside from the being more active now component, she also said that the FAT that we used to have around our knees also acted as a cushion!  So now that there isn't as much fat there, we've actually lost some of the cush that used to help minimize the pain.  For me, it's always worse after I exercise - so she suggested wrapping my knee BEFORE I go out and work it hard.  I did so Saturday night before tubing, and although I still hurt a bit through yesterday afternoon, it was a lot LESS than previous episodes I've had!  And today?  It feels pretty much fine! So try wrapping your knee or using a compression tube when you're doing a lot of walking, etc.  And the pills?  I use those at times, but haven't been as consistant as I should.  But I believe they DO work - they've certainly helped my dog with her hip displaysia!  (she gets beef flavored, but the vet said I could give her the people kind in a bit of peanut butter - same thing.)

Hi Darla Thanks for much for you reply and good idea......I'm going to try wrapping my knee and see if that helps. The worst pain I had was at the library the other day, I went down on my knees to look on the bottom shelf and got a sharp stabbing pain. Now, I have to try and go down on my left knee instead of my right.  The knee wrap sounds like a great idea. Thanks Peggy
