coming out of lurker mode -- iron question
So hi everyone. I am enduring this cold CRAP with a smile on my face--yeah, because it's frozen on my face! LOL
Kidding. Kidding. Well, not really, but anyhoo... I have been having problems with constipation. Now my RN wants me to start taking an iron supplement. Won't this back me up even more?!? I'm afraid to start it because of the lack of poo issue!
Should I follow her advice and swig back some MOM every other day? ACK I just don't know what to do!

It depends on what type of iron you take on whether it will plug you up. Ferrous sulfate is one known to plug you up, besides it doesn't absorb as well...try a carbonyl iron or a chelated one - Vitalady.com has a carbonyl iron called Tender Iron, I'm not sure what Vitron-C is - it already has the vitamin C in it that helps with absorption. That you can find at CVS I've heard. I use Solgar Gentle Iron (a chelated one) and it doesn't cause constipation. I find that on the internet.
Adding fiber is a great idea to ward off the poopie problems...but make sure you're taking a good form of iron that is absorbable.
Note - I can't take Benefiber..it causes so much gas I nearly blew the roof off. Obviously it doesn't do that to everyone, but keep it in mind if you start using it and can't figure out why you have the toots.
Good Luck!

Miralax is a gift from the gods! You could also take Colace which is a stool softener and is considered safe to take longer term. There are always the individually wrapped prunes as well, but I just can't convince myself to turn into a nursing home resident yet ( I remember we fed them to all the residents every meal when I worked as an aide) lol Good luck, is sucks to be "stuck up" if you know what I mean.
