my surgery date is Feb 11th and I am going to go alone.. I have a 6 hour drive to Duluth from my home in Ontario.  My family lives 15 hours south of me in southern ontario.  i have a few friends up here in the wild north but they are unable to come with me.. so i travel alone My question is ...when I get released from the hospital, will they make someone pick me up or can i just take a cab to the hotel?  I am planning on staying 2 nights after the release from the hospital.. thanks for listening

Hello, I'm sorry that no one is coming with you, that saddens me. I would think you could take a cab to the hotel, I don't think they would want you driving when you are taking pain meds. Can't anyone make the trip home with you? You are going to be tired, and feel a little weak for that long of a drive. Good Luck, I will pray for someone to make the trip with you.

IMHO -- I don't know if they require someone drive you home, but GF you need to find someone to do the driving.  I considered myself in great shape to be doing all the walking I did after surgery and not taking any pain meds the day after surgery.  But I NEVER would have considered driving until at least 10 days after surgery without being a danger to yourself and others on the road.  It will take time to get the anethesia out of you.  You are NOT going to be able to drive 6 hours home for a while  -- and not until you have been off all pain meds for at least 48 hours.  You ARE going to be tired and should not be driving that distance!!!  And because you don't know what is going to happen with pain, gas, etc. after surgery, planning for someone to be there to drive you home is a must so you aren't stressing about how you are going to make it home!!!  Maybe you could take the money you were going to spend on a hotel for two nights and offer to have someone come down with you and pay for the hotel for them to stay at to drive you back.  They can sightsee while you are in the hospital so they get a mini-vacation.  Then you can rest and sleep while they drive you home when you get out.  No need for you to stay at a hotel and you'll be home!!! Oh dear, I am sorry you don't have anyone to go with you to the hospital.  Is there is someone that could perhaps fly down to meet you, to take the drive back?  That may not be the most cost effective option, but I fear that you will not be in the best shape to drive yourself home.  That anesthesia affects people differently and it could take more than just two days to feel close to 100%, not to mention that you will be on pain meds to help alleviate any pain you may be having.  I pray that someone will be able to help you, you deserve the chance to heal and be safe on your way home!  I am praying Prayerthat this works out positively for you!    Jeanne

Oh honey....do NOT drive yourself so closely to surgery.  Your surgeon may even give you a timeline before you should drive and it WILL include at least 48 hours after your last pain med.  As you've heard already, the anesthesia will take awhile to leave your system as well.  I like Barb's idea, sounds like a good solution.  Or....if they can't stay while you are in the hospital, perhaps two can come down the day you're released and one drive you home and the other drive your car home.  I will be sending up prayers for this and he'll work something out for you.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I am having a pity party all by myself today but I think that is because I am on 3 week liquid diet.. i am peeing out all my brains.   I will stay in the hospital for the required time and then go to the hotel for at least two days... i have recently had my gall bladder out lap.. and i was up and at it within 3 days. again thanks everyone ... i am asking for help in my prayers and i hope this will work out one way or another..
