Calcium

PK posted this on the main RNY board and I thought it was quite the interesting thread. She really had a good point about doctors IMO. We all know how increasingly important it is to be in charge of your health, so maybe that is why I agree with some of her points, but anyhoooo... Read if you get a few minutes...and tell me what your surgeon recommended, please. Thanks! http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/rny/a,messageboard/action, replies/board_id,5465/cat_id,5065/topic_id,3499333/

I know she isn't a professional but I agree with her.  If the research says citrate what hurts to take it?  I've been on this board and researching independently myself for 5 years and citrate seems to be the answer.  I think PNC is still recommending Viactiv or Tums (carbonate) but I'm taking citrate.  We're all adults here and have to make up our own minds.  The only personal story I know of is a fellow co-worker had WLS a year before me and was taking carbonate on recommendation from her Dr - she now has osteoporosis and takes an RX for it.  Maybe she would have had it anyway...??  Who knows?  In any event - thanks for the post - I'm sure others will have varying opinions.

I was told to take Calcium Citrate specifically for those reasons.   I take two of the Citrical Creamy Chews a day, one after lunch and  one after supper.

Hi Pam, Where do you get the Citrical Chews?

My surgeon and nurses stress calcium citrate and not carbonate - for the same reasons she posted.  I found the citrical caramel chews for now - but may switch to the liquid calcium citrate at bariatriceating.com after the surgery.

Thanks for the article sweetie! My doctor recommends calcium citrate. I take three  Citracal Creamy Bites a day. He does not want us using  anything else but citrate. Sounds like he is definately right on this one! Have a good day Amy!! Hugs  connie d

Thanks Amy for the info!  I wondered why they said citrate but I always did it that way too.  I just was curious why one was preferred over the other.  I know I will continue to take the citrate I have good bones and i would certainly like to keep it that way! Kristi
