Hi Everyone, This is my first forum post-so be kind to me   I had lap routen y on Monday and felt great right afterwards.  The first day at home I had more and more pain and then nausea, so I had to go back to the hospital and get more pain meds and something for nausea.  I don't have a leak which I'm relieved about, but keeping liquids going is struggle.  My pain is better today but the nausea just sticks with me.  So give me some advice on how you kept the liquids going?  Honestly, I feel like I'm recovering from the flu and would love to eat a saltine cracker with butter on it.  My hubby says my mind isn't telling the rest of my body that crackers isn't able to happen right now.  He comes up with the craziest analogies. Look forward to your advice

Just do your best... the flu like feeling is normal.  I was told by my surgeon to drink through the nausea.  Your body is telling you no no no but you have to or face dehydration.  Just sip slowly and often..... Dont worry this will pass and do your best.  Keep in contact with your Dr's office.

Good luck....

Linda

some people have problems with cold water, try drinking room temp water and sip sip sip....no big amounts, but drink often.  Sometimes the nauseous is from dehydration, as Linda said.

Best wishes to you!!

Hi there! NO-NO-NO to the cracker!! Small sips...try warm peppermint flavored tea...it can help with the nausea. Trust me....keep sipping...I had to go in about 3 wks out to get fluid...I had gotten sick and couldn't keep my fluids going down and they stuck the old I.V. in and I sat through a few hours of drip, drip , drip....2 bags full! Not fun! Good luck!! Sherry- AND WELCOME TO THIS GREAT SUPPORT GROUP!!!

I had terrible time with fluids in the first week, what I did was room temp water (cold did not agree with me water-wise), baby sips  (I actually used a spoon and ate it like soup!).  Also I did lots of sugar free popsicles as it was the only thing I could tolerate.  Doc said okay, as long as staying hydrated.  He didnt care about the empty nutrition in the first month, just keeping fluids in.  HOPE YOU FIND SOMETHING THAT WORKS FOR YOU!  Also watch out for weird headaches, could be an early sign of dehydration.   Lori

Welcome to the boards. It was hard for me to remember not to take big gulps at first. And pay attention to when you feel nausea. What was it you had? Is it on everything or only a couple of things? I found certain things made me sick and others not. Best of Luck and Congrats!

I was pretty nauseous until I moved onto pureed foods. Can they give you anything for the nausea? Ginger Tea might make your tummy feel better.

I eat a TON of SF popsicles-

I tried something too early and it scratched all the way down. I had my RNY on 12-18 and still wouldn't try a cracker. Once you start on creamed soups, there are so many good canned potatoe and corn and clam chowders. I just avoided the chunks in it. I think I was able to tolerate bean w/bacon early I just added a bit of extra water to thin it out a bit.

Good luck and it gets much easier.

Please drink through the nausea,  being nauseous can be a sign of being dehydrated.  Nothing at all tasted very good to me, so I drank water with just a bit of propel added to it (the full strength tasted disgusting)/ I ended up having to go in for a few bags of fluid a few days after coming home.  Also, there are anti-nausea meds they can give you.  I felt great in the hospital and horrible for a few days at home, but I hardly remember those days now!  It really does get so much better and easier.  And welcome ! I see you got some good advice above. I just wanted to pop in to welcome you to the MN OH board. I hope that you are able to get the nausea under control soon.  Lori
