I will be 1 year post op in February. I had the RNY. Everything has been wonderful! But, about 6 weeks ago I starting having anxiety (totally new for me). The past 2 weeks, I have had anger, irritability and lack of motivation. I almost walked out on my job! (I have always been known for being very laid back.) I have had depression in the past, and this is different. This feels like I have taken an anger pill. My daughter had the same symptoms when she was on certain birth control pills, so she thinks it is hormones. However, I am years post menopausal. Also, I started having hot flashes again after about 3 months of weight loss last summer. Has anyone experienced this? Or tried HRT? Will it go away?

Wish I could help, but I would definately talk to your doctor about it.  I know hormones are affected quite a bit by the surgery, with us holding the hormones in the fat and losing the fat they are released into the system, so maybe once the fat is gone and you are leveling off on the loss, maybe your body getting use to the hormones again.  I'm not sure about being post menopausal however, I do know that being obese causes womens hormones to not work properly, perhaps this is them starting to work now.  I don't know, but something definately worth discussing with your doc.   Please post and let us know what the doc says, I'm interested.

About a year after my partial hysterectomy (they left my ovaries so I wouldn't go into menopause at the age of 40), my DH, who has never said a bad thing about me, stated that I was "a bit crabby and not myself".  I had the exact same symptoms you had.  Found out my ovaries had stopped working.  I couldn't sleep, I was soooo irritable, hot flashes, cold spells -- was miserable.  I was on HRT for 10 years and then stopped because of the breast cancer scare linked with HRT.  I only lasted 4 months and all the symptoms were back so I went back on HRT.  I've also been on anti-depressants for years.  I've been really stable for a few years now. Since the surgery, I take the same amount of HRT and anti-depressant, but I'm noticing lots of irritability, anger for no reason, crying for no reason, no hot flashes (I'm a freeze baby or normal -- depends), etc.  So I know what you mean by "it feels different".  The irritability and anger seems like hormones, but the crying and no hot flashes is confusing me.  But these are later in the day -- so I think the medication has passed through my system by mid-afternoon, and then my body is on its own until the next day when I take medications again. I have my 3 month check tomorrow and I'm going to ask the nurse if I should get my PCP to change the prescriptions to take twice a day to even out the distribution -- I'll let you know....

You've hit the nail on the head...mood swings, irritiability.....all the things that were masked previously by our fat are now exposed, especially our emotions and physically, our hormones are readjusting. I myself am going on an antidepressant in a week after I meet with my PCP, she said this is a totally normal part of the process. Good luck! Megan
