Were your eating/dieting habits like mine?
The full name of it is Dialectical Behavior Therapy or DBT and I attended my groups through a private psychologist who used to be with the U of M. There are places all over that offer it I know of one in Brooklyn Center called DBT Associates, Chrysalis in Minneapolis offers classes and if you contact your insurance provider they may be able to offer you other options that I am not able to think of right now. I am not sure if Methodist or PNC offers the class, but they too may be able to direct you in the direction of a good program.
The basis of DBT is to relearn or learn for the first time how to cope with life, especially a crisis or difficult situations without relying on old behaviors that are not healthy. They start with teaching you the difference between Emotion mind and Logic mind and to try and be in a balance of the two called Wise mind. The other modules include emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal communication, and I think there isone more that I am forgetting.
I am glad you realized that you are not alone in how you eat/diet before and that you won't be alone as you go through this journey!
If there is one person on this board who says they haven't been where you are, they are so not telling the truth. You asked to hear from those of us who have had trouble sticking to a diet much of our life -- You should be getting around 5,000 responses -- We have ALL dieted ourselves to the point our bodies won't let us any more -- well on more than 600 calories a day and who the hell can do that without help!!!
You do have to be ready to make the life style change. I think I mentioned to you at coffee to practice now for what you are going to experience in the future with the liquids during meals, drinking all the water, exercising, etc. Then it won't seem that you are changing everything when you have the surgery. You don't have to be perfect -- just do it 3 - 4 a week for practice -- it isn't that bad -- REALLY!!! And counseling or getting help to learn how to talk yourself out of eating should be resolved if you really feel you won't be able to do it.
Get yourself to some of the group sessions -- they are REALLY informative -- and REALLY inspiring!!! You can talk face to face with someone who is about to have surgery, just had surgery, had surgery a little while ago, and who had it long ago. The next PNC group is next Tuesday at the Park Nicollet in Burnsville from 6 - 7:30.
See you at coffee on Saturday!!!

Lisa,
I'm so glad you and I are at about the same place on this journey. You ask such good questions and I get to benefit from all the helpful answers! Let me know if you do the counseling. I like that idea, too. As my dietician keeps saying "I'm not a therapist."
My endocronologist recommended the surgery today, too. It seems hard to believe that there's a veritable "cure" out there for diabetes. I relly have to take advantage of it. As he said, though, I need to do it soon, since I'm 63.

Oh honey.....we were ALL where you are. I may not have eaten a LOT of food most of the time, but it was those horrible choices of food that I did eat that got me where I was. Things will change with the surgery. We are all sisters and brothers from more than just having the surgery, we've all come from the same place. You're going to do fine....it's great you are figuring all of this out now and know where you need help.
