When I was diabetic pre-surgery, I was on Metformin, Amaryl, AND two different types of insulin.  Humalog, which is a short acting type that I took before meals, and Lantus a longer acting insulin.  If you're on oral meds and still have readings in the upper 300 to 400 range...sounds like you need insulin too.  Talk to your Dr about the Actos too - from what I've read it can cause weight gain, or at least it makes it difficult to lose weight while on it.  That usually defeats the purpose of taking it I would think.  It's weird, it seems like diabetes is one of those diseases that is mis-managed alot.  I think it's because it's associated with obesity...and we always think it's all our fault.  Whether or not you are compliant in your diet or exercise - it's important to get treatment.  I guarantee that once you get your levels closer to normal, you will feel a lot better - both physically and mentally.  I've been there...done that.

From reading all of the responses and getting more information I really hope that you are able to get yourself to the doctor so that they can adjust or look at a different medication to help control your bloodsugar.  I know that you said that having surgery is not an option for you because of not having anyway to pay for it, but I just want to say keep your chin up and if you have any sort of insurance to be persistant in your appeals.  I am not sure if you have already been down this road, but I just wanted to offer some encouragement as well.  I hope everything can be worked out and you can get the blood sugar under control.

Thank you,  my insurance has an exlusion so i'm not sure an appeal would help.

Sounds like you need insulin to control your sugars - either that or a tight controlled diet for a while checking blood sugars 4 times a day and journalling them.  Go see the doctor now!!!

GET TO THE DOCTOR!   I totally hear you about not wanting to go because you will get yelled at - I would do that, but my sugars didn't get better.  I am also on the insulin pump (Medtronic version) and it is the BEST thing that I have ever done (before surgery).  Not that that cured me, and I still had some issues, but once we got things figured out, I was feeling so much better, and you will too.   Don't worry about what the doctor says - s/he is trying to help you be healthy.  Get those sugars under control and you will be much happier! Also, with the insurance, if you do an appeal, try to show them how you will be actually saving them money in the long run if they cover this surgery.  You will cut down on the amount of prescription drugs, you will have fewer complications due to the diabetes and being obese.  You can atleast try, you won't be any worse off than you are right now.

see with the surgery though, its not the insurance's exlusion its the company i work for.   see i'm very prideful and also wouldn't want an insulin pump because i would think i was an odd ball for having to do that, already think i'm a weirdo for having to take anti depressents.  I'm on some byetta stuff now.  13 months ago i was walking every morning with my girlfriend and my blood sugars were consistently under 150 alllll the time.    i don't get it

Your body CHANGED. Your body is not processing blood glucose as well as it used to. It is not a matter of having done anything wrong, it is a matter of what your body is or in this case ISN'T doing. Don't worry about surgery, right now you need to be concerned about those blood sugar levels. Maybe even consider going to ER today. If you don't get your blood sugar level down, surgery won't matter, because you won't be around for it.  Get going my friend....NOW

Buffs,  I've been a diabetic for years as well.  And I completely understand the embarassment, the humiliation, the feeling of failure that keeps us from doing the right thing for our bodies.  We're ashamed of our disease.  But the way one nurse described it to me (I wish I had her script!), she made me realize that while my weight was a contributing factor to the diabetes, it's also a disease that can be treated.  The pills alone aren't doing enough for you.  Insulin can.  I resisted going on insulin for a LONG time, but I ended up with an A1C over 11 as well, and I conceded that I needed to do something for my health, or die.  Death was not an option.  Going on insulin isn't a miracle cure, but you can adjust your doses to match your sugars and your diet (within reason).  At my last blood check in October, my A1C was 6.8!   It is SO worth going in and doing what they tell you to do for yourself!  A good doctor will approach your issue seriously, not negatively, encourage you to do what you need to do, NOT scold you for what you may have been doing. You have my prayers for the courage to get yourself in, and to take care of yourself!
