Hair Falling out faster than my weight

Okay, now I am getting really kind of bummed out and disgusted. At the rate my hair is falling out I think I may be bald before I reach my weight loss goals. I know it is all about the protein. On only 1/4 cup of food per meal (and 99% of it is always protein), what else can I do? Is it really all about the protein? Do I need to go against my doctor's wishes and start shoveling in protein drinks in order to get enough protein? How long does it take (assuming I started getting in the 50 -60 grams of protein in daily today) for the hair to stop falling out? I even bought some Biotin on Linda A's suggestion, but how long before that starts to help? Anyone got any pearls of wisdom or just good ole fashioned advise?

My only "advice" would be to accept the hair loss as the sucky part of this whole deal.  And learn to appreciate WHY it's happening, because you're losing a LOT of weight!  Would you rather hold onto both your hair AND all the weight?  Or just deal with the hair loss, knowing it will start to slow down and eventually grow back in when the weight loss slows?  It was the one thing that bothered me most beforehand, but having lost @ 120#, I can honestly say I don't regret any of it!  You can also get a bit more creative with cut and style, maybe even color, to camouflage the loss.  I go through a LOT of hairspray these days, keeping the coif up where I want it!

I like your attitude. Thanks for lifting my spirits and reassuring me that it will eventually stop...and there are things I can do to work with it.

Im sorry.... but it is what it is.  Its not what your doing now its your body feeling the shockwave from the surgery and abit after.  So if it makes you feel better, your normal?  Hardly comforting. Hang in there.... try and concentrate on the parts below your hair.. your beautiful face and your tiny body.  Hugs sweetie

Totally normal Ramona!  It will slow down.  I know when mine first started to come out at about 4 months, I thought I was going to be bald in a week, then it slowed down.  Still comes out a little bit, but not like it was.

I know this is a sensitive topic, especially for women.  I have always had thick hair, until now!  My kids are saying that I need a wig because my hair is so thin on top.  The good news is that I am losing weight and it isn't permanent. My wife and I have both had the surgery and both had the issue.  My wife heard about a product from her hair dresser and she uses it now.  As a matter of fact, she submitted her pictures to the company and won $500!  She is featured on the website!  It is a make-up for  the scalp that helps your hair look thicker.

Hope this helps.  Here is the website:  http://www.dermmatch.com

I SERIOUSLY think I may try this stuff!   Good 'ol Ron Popiel has one of those other smoke & mirrors type thin hair products - I was GONNA try that once upon a time, but this looks way better - I think I'll get some! Thanks, Brad!!!

Sorry to hear about your hair loss Ramona!  It definitely is one of the least enjoyable affects of WLS.  I really didn't mind losing mine so much - it was the finding it EVERYWHERE that bothered me the most - in my underwear, covering the bathroom floor.  But just to let you know...I'm at 9 months and about two months ago it finally slowed down and about a month ago I finally noticed regrowth.  I know getting extra protein can help - but I don't think it's going to prevent it entirely.  Good luck with it honey!

Great -- I've been really paranoid about this starting soon.  I seem to remember it starts any where from the 3rd to the 6th month and lasts up to 6 months.  I am solid on getting in at the very least my required 46 grams of protein a day so I'm hoping I won't notice as much.  But like you, I'm still only eating 3 tablespoons of food at a meal so getting it in requires an imagination at times.   Have you thought about adding more milk for the protein?  Each ounce of milk is a gram of protein.  I can't stand the protein shakes -- they make me sick to my stomach and the smell of chocolate turns my tummy.  Funny because I loved them and drank them all the time before surgery.  Now my hubby is drinking the 4 cases I bought for after surgery!!!
