According to a recent Stanford University Medical Center study, post-bariatric patients are likely to reach a blood alcohol level (BAC) above the legal limit for driving – putting them at risk for receiving a DUI – after just one drink.  http://www.docshop.com/2007/12/12/the-one-drink-dui-watch-ou t-paris-and-lindsay/

I've found out that I can't even have one drink--beer, wine, whatever--'cuz I get right loopy. I'd be a danger for sure behind the wheel of the car!

I had one glass of wine last night...it lasted over 4 hours. I mostly drank water. I wouldn't drive if I felt any effect at all. connie d

I was not a big drinker prior to surgery, took 3 or so to really be getting silly. Now I nurse one drink the whole night!  More than 1 and I know I can't drive.  I can't hack it at all, that first one is enough to make me hungover the next  day. And I can't have the really sugary drinks anymore...no more grasshoppers or pink squirrels...can't handle the ice cream. I still don't drink very often, but when I do I have one and make it a good one!

That was neat to read.  To know why the effects of alcohol hit so quickly after surgery.  I don't drink, but have heard about this and wondered why it affected WLS patients differently.  Thanks for posting this.

Farrah, thanks for the post, are you coming back for the holidays?  I miss you at the PNC meetings. I wanted to post about this as i have shared with the group, after surgery alcohol can have a different effect for everyone.  For me it hit after the first few sips, then i felt it wear off very quickly could drink all night long and  that is what we need to be careful of also.  Everyone please be careful when choosing to drink, or not to drink, i drank alot before surgery, so i thought a couple would be ok, it did start out that way, then progressed into more and more... What i want everyone to know is that i have been sober 8 months and i don't blame surgery for becoming a full blown drunk, but just be careful things like transferrence addiction can happen to anyone at anytime not just with alcohol. Peace, Kim D

WOW!  Thanks for sharing!  I for one, admit, that I have had more then just one drink and now reading this....wow!  I hope everyone takes this to heart and realizes the potential to ruin someone's life just from one drink and then chosing to drive!  THANK YOU FARRAH!
