Iron Help Needed

My numbers are low and I have been taking iron everyday - not with or within 2 hours of calcium or dairy products.

My question is does anyone know if there is a certain type of iron that is better absorbed after RNY?

One thing to help with the iron and it works pretty good... Cook with Cast Iron pan. The iron from the pan goes into the food and is easier for or bodies to absorb. It is a pretty easy solution. I can tell you how to season the pan and how to take care of cast iron if you want.

Cast Iron pans make GREAT eggs and any meat. I cook my salmon in it all the time. The more you cook with it, the more it becomes a nonstick type of pan. I use sea salt to scrub it with a paper towel. Also, you can usually clean it when it is hot much easier. Adding oil each time you cook just seasons it more each time. The big thing to remember is that the pan is supposed to be a little oily. You don't want to wash away the oil every time. The more you cook with it, the more your body will get iron. I have a friend who had a problem with iron intake. She went to cooking in cast iron almost exclusively and her iron has been great for years now. My grandfather cooked eggs in his pretty much every morning and he would just wipe it out with a paper towel and leave it on the stove. No soap --- If you use soap, the pan will absorb it and make your food taste like soap. No Tomatoes --- Tomatoes are too acidic and they do weird things to the pan and to the taste, so no spaghetti sauce or anything like that. Other than that, you can cook anything in them.

I've been on 'chelated' iron called FERROTRATE". It's in capsule form, not a tablet.  I have trouble absorbing nutrients and my iron count was pretty low until I started these.  Apparently the chelation  changes the iron molecule (or something..) but regardless, my numbers have been good since I started this brand. This type doesn't cause constipation either.

The best iron I found for absorption and no constipation was Solgar's Gentle Iron.  My numbers were at about 7 and after 3 months of taking 2 a day (50mg) my numbers jumped to 34!  I'd highly recommend it.  I found it online - here's a link to it: http://www.amazon.com/Solgar-Gentle-Iron-veggie-caps/dp/B000 13Z0QA
