OT - My new friend
How sweet of all of you to be so concerned with lil' Ricky! (yeah, Ric Ric Ricky, Ricky Raccoon!)
Believe me, if I thought there was an ageny that would do anything with a troubled raccoon, I'd be the first to call. But we have an unwritten policy of letting nature take it's course, even when it's sad. We have a Wildlife manager and small field staff, but diagnosing and re-habbing raccoons is not high on their priority list. Same can be said for other agencies. The Raptor Center is fabulous, but they don't deal with furry critters, only the feathered types. If this was a more unique animal (really, is there anything more unique than a raccoon???), we'd probably be more aggressive with it. But this is most likely a sick animal - not rabid, but not well, either. And there simply aren't facilities or dollars out there to try to care for something that many consider a nuisance animal. That's the sad truth.
He seems to be doing pretty well, tho - he looks much healthier than other sick raccoons I've been around, so maybe he WAS hand raised and just intends to keep us company all winter? That's what I'M hoping!!!
