Short Term Disability & Returning to work

I asked for short term disability from my employerto cover thissecond week that I have been out of  the office, however today when I received my approval I was told that I was approved and my return to work day, per the physician is December 26th. I was planning to return next Monday, the 17th, but now am wondering if I should just take that extra week or so to get good and healed or should I go back on my original date? I am feeling okay, I am still kind of sore and get tired if I do too much walking sitting up for too long, but otherwise things are going well. I work in an office and for the most part sit at my desk doing data entry.  Any suggestions or ideas are very much appreciated.

I'd take the time off - let yourself heal, start slowly back to full liquids, make it through the holidays and THEN get back to work.  If your surgeon wrote you off until the 26th there's a reason, ya' know?  2 weeks is a quick turnaround to go back to work - take it easy on yourself - you've earned it!! healing hugs, Megan

Yes, Megan is right on. Do what the Dr. says. Rest, heal and give yourself the best start to the new tool to health. You do come first now. The data will be there to enter on the 26th.

Take care of YOU!

Your doc knows what he's doing....if he says the 26th, trust him!   I went back after only two weeks to a desk job because there were no benefits.  It was horrible.  I could only do 1/2 days for two weeks, so it took a total of 4 weeks to be able to handle a 40 hr wk desk job!

I also work a desk job and went back after two weeks, i made it my full 8 hours each day but I was exhausted by the time I got home. Take whatever time you can and dont' be fooled by the tiny lap scars theres alot of healing going on in there.

I agree with the others, take the time he recommends and rest.  It will be difficult to go back fatigue wise and the extra rest will prevent you from having to leave early when you do go back.  Also, it's quite likely that your company will not allow you to come back if your doctor's note says the 26th.  I know in my situation, because of the short-term disability thing I had to present a note saying that I was able to return to work.  It's probably one of the very few times you have a legitimate reason to really give yourself the extra time you need - take full advantage! Healing hugs!

Run with it! They sent me back to work WAY TOO SOON. It's a benefit you have earned, don't be afraid to use it! Megan

I could take six weeks and I took every day of it.  I used the time to rest up and you should too. And having the time before Christmas will just mean you won't be exhausted and can really relax for the holiday.  Then you only have a short 3 day work week before the weekend again.  And with the New Years' holiday the next week, another short week.  So they are good transition weeks. Thanks everyone it helps to hear other's experieces with how much time off work and such.  I do have to say one thing I was afraid of with returning to work next week is the exhaustion since I seem to be needing around 10 hours and sometimes more rest each night.  Today I ended up sleeping for 13 and that's only because my dad came to see if I was okay since I had been asleep for so long.  I think I will take the extra time off and I will just call my supervisor and tell her it was doctor's orders.
