It says sugar free, but....

I went shopping with my mom after my 1 week appointment yesterday and I had the hardest time trying to find sugar free foods that really were sugar free.  I looked at the SF Blue Bunny yogurt, but it still had 7 grams of sugar in it so I ended up getting the Dannon Light & Fit sugar and carb control since it only had 2 grams of sugar in it. Then the store didn't carry the SF CIB so I looked at hot chocolate and the SF Swiss Miss still had 7 grams of sugar, but the Diet Swiss Miss only had 2 grams so I chose that instead.  I am starting to learn that I need to double check everything before I buy it for the actual sugar content so I don't find out the hard way if I dump on sugar or not.  On the plus side last night I got to enjoy a couple of Tbsp of yogurt and then later on a nice cup of hot chocolate!

I understand......I don't by as many groceries but it takes me longer to shop because I am always reading labels looking for something new to try. It is just a new way of life for me.

You are doing great....it will all get easier!!

Dannon light n fit carb sugar control also has a yogurt smoothie that has 8 grams of protein in it. I have a hard time with milk and don't like the soy or the lactaid, so my nut has me subbing the 3 cups of milk with the yogurt smoothie. they are yummy!

I will have to keep my eye out for that it sounds like something I might be able to grab and go for those times when sitting down to eat a meal just isn't possible.  Thanks for the info!

Just remember that there is a difference between sugar free and no sugar added.  Things like milk have natural sugars in them that will show up on the  nutritional information as 'sugar'  :-)

You also don't have to be totally sugar free.  At a PNC meeting we discussed sugar-free and I seem to remember, and have been doing, up to 15 grams at a meal.  If I can get something I like with less, of course I will.  But up to 15 isn't a big deal.  So don't beat yourself up with 7 grams of sugar.  Especially with the amounts you are currently eating -- that would be nothing!!!  I'm only at 3 tablespoons so a 15 gram per serving may be 3 meals for me so I'm only getting 5 which is great. Yogurt individual serving containers probably have 3 servings in it based on your pouch size so you were actually only getting 2 grams when you ate it -- not the 7 grams per serving.  So be sure you look at the serving size too.  Those little yogurts are one serving for a non-WLS or further out WLS person.  You aren't near that amount yet.  And when you are at that portion size, under 15 is a good rule.  It's things like the juice which is 25 grams per 4 ounces that should be watched. BUT GREAT THAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE LABELS!!!!  That is a fantastic step!!! XXOO

Thank you for the suggestions, I wasn't sure how much sugar would be safe and didn't even think that I would only be eating 1/3 of it rather than all.  I will keep that in mind as I go grocery shopping next week.

Everything has a little sugar in it especially if it has fruit which has it's own sugar.  That's why most lables ready "No Sugar Added" now instead of "Sugar Free".  I eat the Blue Bunny every day, the Dannon doesn't sit well with my tummy.
