are pickles ok?

Ok, I know that pickles have no food value, but I get to move on to pureed's this week, and I always used to put diced dill pickle in my egg salad to add some zing.  This shouldn't be a problem now, right?

I, by no means, am not a doc, but I would think that when you move on to puree that if ya puree the relish ALL should be fine>  Best to ya!  Keep up the fabulous job!!

You ever have that moment when something that should be so simple, makes your head swim?  This was one of those moments.  Thanks!

Christi,  I added pickle relish to some ham salad that I made and it went just fine, but everyone is different.  As Sandy said, if it is pureed, it shouldn't be a problem.  Remember, try it at home first - don't want to try that somewhere when you are out and have it not sit well in your pouch. Adding zing to foods is a good thing - especially at this stage of eating when you are still somewhat limited.  Good luck!

Zing and texture!  Of course everything is still pretty much the same texture, but it's better than liquid.  There are so many simple things that I am so excited to be able to eat again.  chicken, eggs, cottage cheeze.  It's weird how in this short time since I had surgery, I am already noticing differences in my attitudes toward food.  I still have cravings, for instance, today I could have sworn somebody was following me around with an egg roll and sweet and sour sauce from LeeAnn Chin.  I kept imagining that I could smell it, and I wanted one so bad I could almost taste it.  But I was so happy to eat my cottage cheese, it was absolutely delicious.  I know my head is still messing with me, and even when the cravings kick up, I still don't have the desire to "cheat."  It hasn't been that hard to push those cravings aside.  Besides, the things I'm craving aren't important enough to me to mess up my window.   Wow, verbal diarrhea!  Thanks for your support.

Yep, you can!! At least I did!!!!  I added it to my tuna salad without no problem!  However, it doesn't list it in the baker's bible.  Just make sure its pureed or chewed up to the consistency of pureed before swallowing.  I actually used no sugar added relish.  You might want to remove the skin from the pickle too.  It might be too hard to digest at first.  Then the farther you are out you can eat the skin too (others have had trouble with the skins, like the pickle, apples etc.).  Just my 2 cents. OR the other thought would be to add a little of the pickle juice to the salad.  This may give you the taste you need!! Enjoy!

Thanks Lucy!  It eventually occured to me that I could just use the juice, but I'm thinking that I may be hoping that I'll have just a few bits big enough to chew on.  Ok, I am hoping to chew a couple of wee bits.  Hm, so far pureeds are not giving me any trouble at all.  I had a little chicken blended with just a little bit of lite salad dressing and medium taco sauce for supper, and it went great (tasted great too).   In fact, they (pureed's and such) are going much better than liquids ever did.  And, I can definitely feel the restriction of my little tummy now, and I love that!   Things are definitely on the upswing.

Actually... I asked my nutritionist about pickles!!  I was craving them, so at 2 weeks out I asked her about them, and she said not to have them with meals, because they wouldn't include anything to the nutritional value of a meal and I need to get my protein in, so I had my dinner one night, (and I am on the pureed phase at the moment but I haven't been pureeing my food)  And after my tuna with mayo dinner I waited about two hours and I got out the baby-dills I bought and ate about three baby dills.  I didn't blend them I just really enjoyed the flavor as I chewed the hell out of them, and they make a good mush, so I wasn't worried about them getting stuck.  But i do realize that I ate too much of them because a half hour later I thought I had a burp but when I burped it was all pickle mush so I had to swallow it back down.  So that's what I can contribute to your pickle question.. I did ask, and you can have them, but try not to fill up on them, get your protein in. Enjoy !

When I read the back of the pickle jar, I was a little surprised at how "useless" they are (for nutritional value).  All I really want to use them for is to add a little color and zing, so hopefully they won't affect my protein intake.  I know I don't have room right now for anything but protein, I know I've gotten full already.  Isn't it just the weirdest thing to get full off of such a small amount of food?  I love it, but it does kind of throw you for a loop.  Icky for you!  I just started being able to burp this last week, so I imagine that having things, "back up," will be soon to follow.  Of course I am going to be the model patient and not overdo anything, so it really shouldn't be a problem, but...  Thanks for sharing what you learned from your nut with me.  Hope to see you over at St. Paul coffee some Saturday!
